The Director of Engineering works directly with the Vice President, Engineering and other Department Leads. This Director manages all aspects of the software engineering and testing capabilities for Macmillan Learning. The Director owns the end-to-end product development and support functions for Macmillan including software architecture, design, development, testing, support and maintenance. The Director of Engineering also plays an integral part in all product discovery and development efforts for Macmillan Learning.
The position is eligible for remote employment; it will exclude the following locations: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Hawaii, Mississippi, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
In conjunction with the VP of Technology and other Department Leads, establish and maintain an SDLC process that supports fast, incremental delivery of products.
Collaborate with product managers, scrum masters, project managers, engineers, testers and designers throughout the product lifecycle.
Contribute strategically and tactically to evolving market-driven, user-centric products and product marketing efforts to ensure our employees, partners and customers remain aware of the value proposition.
Oversee product development from concept to release, as well as during support and maintenance.
In collaboration with the infrastructure team, ensure the technical infrastructure strategy, configuration and management for products is fast, resilient and scalable.
Establish and evolve consistent technology frameworks, platforms, standards and processes that enable developers to implement compelling software.
Develop and implement rigorous and automated software quality testing processes and tools to make software delivery times faster without compromising quality.
Lead regular design reviews and other team-wide design efforts.
Oversee the creation of team deliverables (including architecture and technical design documentation, code, test plans/cases, release plans).
Stay abreast of new and innovative trends in the software development and web development space
Recruit and manage exceptional software and quality assurance engineers.
Mentor development and product teams, providing agile process leadership and direction.
Provide technical direction, guidance, and hands-on management to all team members.
Job requires long periods of close concentration and ability to multi-task in noisy/busy open office environment.
Must be able to travel and work more than 40 hours a week, as needed.
Must be able to sit for long periods of time
Essential Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree
More than 2 years in a leadership capacity within software engineering or software architecture
Experience with distributed systems, large scale system architecture, and product engineering
Experience in distributed computing including work with event-based systems, message oriented middleware, and strong understanding of concurrency
Experience with agile methods and dev ops
Deep experience in a cloud environment
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Computer Science or other related field
Experience in Education Technology
Understanding of Higher Education Market
Extensive AWS experience
Knowledge of design patterns and architectural patterns
Depth in refactoring and major system reengineering
Experience with 3 or more programming languages at scale
Executive experience in a product engineering capacity
