This is a regional position in Downstream, Chemicals and Midstream (DCM) Law based in Dubai, UAE, supporting the International Products and Supply & Trading businesses. The lawyers in DCM Law provide a complete array of legal services in connection with negotiations, advice, drafting, managing, structuring and advocacy on transactions, projects and other matters, working closely with Law management, business leaders, managers and personnel and outside counsel. Whilst the primary scope will be to support the Dubai team, there may be occasions where the successful candidate will be called upon to support the legal colleagues in other offices, including in London, Singapore and Houston. The position reports to the Managing Counsel, JVM&G & Chemicals with a dotted line to the Supervising Counsel, Supply & Trading

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
  • Work closely and collaboratively with all levels of Chevron\xe2\x80\x99s organization in the Middle East, Singapore and globally to understand Chevron\xe2\x80\x99s and in particular, DCM\xe2\x80\x99s businesses, their strategies and priorities in order to provide excellent legal support.
  • Provide timely, pro-active, comprehensive and quality legal advice on a full range of commercial matters, transactions and business activities, including business development opportunities, significant transactions, projects.
  • Provide timely, pro-active, comprehensive and quality legal advice and support on all regulatory matters, including audits and investigations by, and communications with, government authorities.
  • Provide legal support to joint venture operations, including strategies for commercial arrangements, business development, regulatory engagements, and contracting.
  • Provide timely, pro-active, comprehensive and quality legal advice and support on legal issues associated with the trading of petroleum products and petroleum products in terminals, floating storage and transportation in ships and pipelines, trading on products exchanges, such as ICE, CME/NYMEX and international and cross-border transactions. These issues may include, without limitation, regulatory, licensing, competition and/or business registration aspects.
  • Draft, review and negotiate complex contracts across a full range of commercial matters and trading transactions, including without limitation purchase and sale agreements, offtake agreements, marketing agreements, master agreements, terminal storage agreements and pipeline transportation agreements with national oil companies, state-owned oil companies and oil trading companies, ensuring Chevron\xe2\x80\x99s interests are protected and advanced effectively whilst managing and advising on legal and commercial risks.
  • Negotiate resolution of claims (e.g. failure to perform, shortage, off-specification product, demurrage) associated with trading contracts and support litigation efforts as required if the matter is escalated and handle the life-cycle of disputes relating to shipping matters and the supply and trading of petroleum products.
  • Advise and train DCM personnel on Chevron\xe2\x80\x99s corporate policies and compliance requirements and changes in applicable laws and regulations including competition law, market manipulation rules, international trade, import/export rules, anti-corruption laws, corporate governance, anti-boycott and sanctioned parties and internal tax/legal policies and pro-actively evaluate with business leaders compliance by their teams and knowledge gaps as part of the continuing compliance training program.
  • Select, instruct and manage outside counsel in compliance with Chevron\xe2\x80\x99s Outside Counsel Guidelines & processes.
  • Be available for calls and conferencing outside normal work hours and undertake moderate amounts of travel within the Middle East and abroad.
  • Such other legal support work as may be notified by Managing Counsel and/or Supervising Counsel.
Required Qualifications & Qualities:
  • LL.B, Juris Doctorate or other advanced law degree, preferably from a Common Law jurisdiction.
  • Minimum of 8 years\xe2\x80\x99 Post Qualification Experience
  • High ethical standards and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Effective in creating and maintaining high client confidence and satisfaction, communicating clearly, simply and directly with excellent professionalism.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in handling legal matters independently, working collaboratively with clients and other in-house counsels.
  • A highly motivated self-starter capable of working in a fast-paced team environment and collaborating with business clients, other in-house counsels, outside counsel and staff while at all times emphasizing compliance with all applicable laws.
Preferred (good to have) qualifications:
  • Downstream oil & gas industry experience, including in supply, trading & shipping.
  • Legal work experience in the Middle East.
  • In-house MNC experience.
