Serves to aid in the provision of pediatric critical care in a multidisciplinary and holistic manner in the in-patient setting.
3.1 Performs the professional duties of a pediatric critical care doctor
3.2 To perform his duties on the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and provide support for very sick children across the
hospital in-patient setting, namely the Emergency Department, Operating rooms and the Pediatric Ward
3.3 Performs general or special examinations and other procedures covering the full scope of the field of pediatric
critical care. Orders laboratory examinations and x-rays, determines diagnosis, prescribes nursing and dietary
care necessary, orders or applies such preventive measures as required, provides life-saving intervention
relating to airway, breathing and circulatory support of the critically ill child
3.4 Serves as pediatric consultant to in-patient services relating to children such as pediatrics', pediatric surgery and
the emergency room
3.5 Provides in-patient care to the children up to the age of 18 years
3.6 Serves as a specialist in pediatric intensive care providing consultative services to the other Medical
specializations
3.7 Provides technical assistance to pediatric patients, such as airway, breathing and circulatory support
3.8 Reviews journals, texts or periodicals in order to keep current on latest techniques, procedures, drugs and
therapy
3.9 Participates in scheduled in-service training programs and in the regular Physicians' Conference
3.10 Provides on-call coverage for children on the pediatric intensive care unit
3.11 Performs other miscellaneous related duties as requested
3.12 Ensures, Performs, Responsible for hospitalized patients whose condition requires medical care at the specialty
level and or artificial airway, ventilator and circulatory support
3.13 Day-to-day care for all children on requiring Critical Care
3.14 To evaluate, resuscitate and manage critically ill children including those with vital organ and system failures
3.15 To use organ support and replacement systems
3.16 Should have expertise in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management, invasive monitoring, renal
therapy and mechanical ventilation as per that which is routine for pediatric critical care practice
3.17 To anticipate, assess and define problems in the critically ill child, diagnose and implement a management plan
- within the acceptable time frame and according to principles of multidisciplinary care
3.18 To communicate effectively and establish and foster relationships with internal and external clients
3.19 Be compassionate, self-motivated and the ability to work under pressure for hours that is stipulated per contract
3.20 Need to manage the process of end of life care as per hospital policies
3.21 When on-call, the specialist should be available for consultations as requested by doctors in other departments,
in the intensive care areas, ER, and other critical care services
3.22 On duty you should give consultations, on children, as requested by doctors in other departments, in the
intensive care areas, ER, and other critical care services
3.23 Will serve as a major contributor to in-service training activities of the new and existing employees
3.24 Works under the general professional supervision of the Head of the Department.
3.25 Performs professional duties of a pediatric intensivist in adherence to the approved Privileges maintained by
the Critical Care department for individual intensivist. Privileges may differ between individual specialist
pediatric intensivist's, depending on the efficiency, experience, expertise and skills of the particular individual.
3.26 Participates in the reading of EKG's (Electro cardio Gram) for pediatric critical care patients in collaboration with
Pediatric Cardiologists
3.27 Participates in mortality/morbidity review; Quality Assurance and peer reviews
3.28 As is possible, participates in the weekly/ monthly Departmental meeting/ training and participates actively in
various committee meetings as designated such as the ER, Infection Control, PICU and CPR
3.29 Reviews journals, texts or periodicals in order to update latest techniques, procedures, drugs and therapy
3.30 Provides on-call emergency coverage for PICU and Emergency patients
3.31 Comply with all OSH and infection control policies, standards and procedures and cooperate with hospital
management to comply those requirements
3.32 Work accordance with the documented OSH procedures and instructions, specific responsibilities
3.33 Be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures
3.34 Notifying OSH Hazards, incidents, Near misses and issues and assistance with the preparation of risk
assessments, incident reports
3.35 Comply with Waste management procedures and policies
3.36 Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs
3.37 Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems
3.38 The Doctor agrees to perform the following professional duties associated with the role of a PICU Specialist, as
described below. This job description is not exhaustive as the PICU doctor is required to assist anywhere inside
the hospital where there is a requirement to care for sick children and neonates.
3.38.1Patient Care and Management:
3.38.1.1 Provide expert medical care and treatment to critically ill patients admitted to the PICU and other hospital
areas.
3.38.1.2 Conduct through evaluations, assessments, and regular follow-up examinations of patients to monitor
their progress and adjust treatment plans as needed.
3.38.1.3 Order, interpret, and analyse diagnostic tests, tests, including laboratory work, imaging studies and other
procedures, to make accurate diagnoses and develop appropriate treatment strategies.
3.38.1.4 Administer medications, therapies, and procedures, including life-saving interventions, in accordance with
established protocols and guidelines
3.38.1.5 Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary healthcare team, including nurses, respiratory therapists,
pharmacists, and other specialists, to ensure comprehensive patient care.
3.38.1.6 Participate actively in daily rounds, case discussions, and medical consultations to provide input and
expertise on patient management and treatment plans.
3.38.1.7 Supervise and coordinate the care provided by interns, residents, fellows, and other healthcare
professionals involved in patient care in keeping with the roles of the trainees within the scope of
privileges.
3.38.1.8 Document patient records accurately and maintain up-to-date medical charts, progress notes, and
reports
3.38.1.9 Communicate clearly between professionals to ensure high-quality care and clinical engagement.
3.38.1.10 Support the family-centred model of care with the child central to this theme.
3.38.1.11 To involve the hospital support system in the case of a difficult child or family whereby the interaction is
causing emotional disturbance for any member of the team as well as the child her/himself.
3.38.1.12 Follow the contractual obligations as set out in the job description.
3.38.1.13 Must maintain the confidentiality of his work and do everything to build trust within the NMC for all
stakeholders, including patients.
3.38.1.14 Must follow DOH Guidance for healthcare processes such as cybersecurity protection and respect for
patient information.
3.38.1.15 Should understand and adhere to the NMC Ethical code of practice
3.38.2Emergency Response:
3.38.2.1 Be readily available and participate in the on-call schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays,
to respond to medical emergencies in the PICU.
3.38.2.2 Lead or assist in the management of critical situations, including but not limited to cardiac arrest,
respiratory failure, and other life-threatening conditions, employing advanced life support techniques and
interventions.
3.38.2.3 Provide guidance and direction during medical emergencies, ensuring the effective coordination of the
healthcare team and adherence to established protocols.
3.38.2.4 Aid in transferring cases from one hospital to another as required according to the demands of the clinical
situation.
3.38.2.5 The doctor may be required to lead or be involved in different resuscitation scenarios, including neonates,
children, and adults.
3.38.2.6 To attend to the emergency areas within the hospital in a timely manner.
3.38.2.7 To be involved in any area of the hospital where there is a critical patient, including any ward or critical
care area.
3.38.2.8 In the case of children suspected of Non-Accidental Injury, the doctor must record all interactions in a
timely and accurate fashion as this information may be valuable from a legal perspective
3.38.2.9 Should have the skills and technical skills expected of a PICU doctor to deal with the airway, breathing and
circulatory aspects.
3.38.3Quality Assurance and Compliance:
3.38.3.1 Ensure compliance with all relevant medical standards, guidelines, and protocols established by
regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies such as OSH and JCI.
3.38.3.2 Participate in quality assurance activities, peer review, and performance improvement initiatives aimed
at enhancing patient care and safety in the ICU.
3.38.3.3 Continuously monitor and assess the effectiveness of treatment modalities, interventions, and protocols,
recommending updates and improvements as necessary.
3.38.3.4 Ensure drugs are prescribed according to standard dosing and in consultation with the relevant literature
or in discussion with the pharmacy, thereby minimising drug errors.
3.38.3.5 Comply with Good Clinical Practice for research according to the NMC protocols, processes and policies.
3.38.3.6 Where there are Clinical Practice Guidelines or protocols, these should be followed as near as possible.
3.38.4Professional Development:
3.38.4.1 Engage in ongoing medical education and professional development activities to stay current with
advances in critical care medicine, evidence-based practices, and emerging technologies.
3.38.4.2 Attend relevant conferences, seminars, and educational programs to enhance clinical knowledge and
skills.
3.38.4.3 Achieve the required CME points during the course of the licensing period as required by the DOH
guidelines.
3.38.4.4 To involve himself/herself in research activities that will support personal development and affect change
inside the PICU.
3.38.4.5 Attend applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills and awareness programs.
3.38.4.6 Use of appropriate personal protective equipment and following safety systems, also encouraging others
to ensure a supportive culture.
3.38.5Communication and Collaboration:
3.38.5.1 Communicate effectively with patients and their families, explaining medical conditions, treatment
options, and prognosis in a compassionate and understandable manner.
3.38.5.2 Foster positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including referring physicians,
hospital administrators, and healthcare staff
38.5.3 To encourage a culture that is consistent with the values of NMC.
3.38.5.4 Collaborate closely with the hospital's ethics committee when addressing complex ethical dilemmas or
end-of-life care decisions.
3.38.5.5 Work with colleagues to support the care of children, such as assisting in procedures that may or may not
require sedation.
3.38.5.6 Attend meetings and discussions as requested by the HOD or any senior leadership team member.
4.1 Graduate of approved Medical School with a valid license to practice medicine.
4.2 Certification by the American Board of Pediatrics or equivalent U.K. certification Member of the Royal College
of Physicians (PAEDS).
4.3 Must be certified mandatory for Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS), whereas
ATLS is desirable but not mandatory.
4.4 At least two years of full-time pediatric intensive care formal training or five years of full-time pediatric intensive
care experience or 1 year of formal PICU training, and 3 years of full-time pediatric intensive care experience.
4.5 Must adhere to Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations of NMC.
4.6 Current licensure in country of origin and DOH license to practice as a PICU specialist in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
4.7 Excellent command of oral and written English. Knowledge of the Arabic language is desirable but not essential
