1. Operation & Maintenance of All Engineering Systems
Oversee operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Maintain main engines, generators, gearboxes, propulsion systems, steering gear, and stabilizers.
Ensure proper operation of HVAC, water makers, black/grey water systems, pumps, compressors, and fuel systems.
2. Safety, Compliance & Certification
Ensure full compliance with flag-state, class, and international regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM as applicable).
Maintain up-to-date engineering logs, safety equipment records, and certificates.
Conduct regular safety checks on fire-fighting systems (FIFI), bilge systems, and emergency machinery.
Participate in and lead safety drills alongside the Captain.
3. Planned Maintenance System (PMS) Management
Implement and maintain the vessel's PMS (e.g., AMOS, IDEA, or manual schedules).
Schedule and carry out preventative maintenance tasks to minimize downtime.
Track consumables, running hours, spares usage, and maintenance intervals.
4. Troubleshooting & Emergency Response
Diagnose and resolve mechanical or electrical failures quickly to ensure vessel reliability.
Lead emergency responses during engine alarms, power loss, fire, flooding, or fuel issues.
Restore critical systems within safe operational limits.
5. Fuel, Water & Energy Management
Oversee bunkering operations, including sampling, safety precautions, and record-keeping.
Monitor fuel and oil consumption, emissions, and efficiency.
Manage fresh water production and storage, wastewater systems, and power load balancing.
6. Shipyard & Refit Supervision
Plan and supervise yard periods, refits, haul-outs, and major repairs.
Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and surveyors.
Ensure all work meets class and manufacturer specifications.
7. Inventory & Spare Parts Control
Maintain accurate inventory of critical spares, tools, oils, consumables, and technical supplies.
Manage procurement, supplier relationships, and budget tracking for the engineering department.
8. Documentation & Technical Reporting
Keep detailed engine room logs, maintenance records, oil record books, defect reports, and manuals.
Prepare technical reports for the Captain, management company, or vessel owner.
Maintain up-to-date technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and manuals.
9. Crew Management & Collaboration
Supervise any assistant engineer or ETO (if carried).
Coordinate closely with the Captain, Officer of the Watch, Deck, and Interior departments.
Train crew on emergency equipment, safe engine room practices, and basic troubleshooting.
10. Guest Support & Operational Readiness
Ensure all guest-related systems (A/C, water pressure, generators, stabilizers) run reliably.
Provide technical support during guest trips, charters, and long passages.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe engine room environment.
