Job Description

Use mechanical and electronic equipment to help anesthesiologists and other operating room personnel in monitoring and managing patients who are under anesthesia.

Prepares the anesthesia medication, supplies IV fluids and equipment needed for each surgery or procedure.

Labels all medications prepared for each surgery.

Assist consultant anesthesiologist / anesthesia specialist during induction of anesthesia as well as during reversal of anesthesia.

Provides continuity of care during the pre-op, intra-op, and post-op period

Insert IV canulae on the patient.

Helps transport patients to and from the operating room.

Observes patient condition during the surgical procedures, including skin color, dilation of pupils, vital signs, and reports to consultant anesthesiologist.

Takes note of and records patient vital signs during surgery inside the operating room and in the recovery room

Accompanies patient to recovery area and remains until patient's immediate condition is acceptable.

Documents anesthesia notes on patient records with the supervision of anesthesiology consultant

Assist consultant anesthesiologist in responding to patient resuscitation calls.

Cleans equipment and ensure equipment is functioning properly after each surgery.

Makes inventory of stocks for materials and medications used in anesthesia and to inform the nurse OT head to make the necessary stock request.

Take note of all the expiry dates of materials and medicines used for anesthesia.

Fills the anesthesia cart with material supplies and medicines to be used for anesthesia.

Discards ampoules and needles used in the appropriate sharp boxes.

Returns all equipment used by the anesthesia team to their proper location.

Analyse areas for opportunities for improvement and make applicable recommendations for process, system, procedure, and operational changes within the department. Practice as per policies and procedures regarding quality, safety, and infection control. Raise and act on concerns about patient safety. Undertake any appropriate duties or responsibilities (as directed) regarding the development of Quality Improvement, Safety, and Infection Control requirements.
