Job Description

Job Purpose: To provide high-quality optometric care during the maternity leave of the permanent optometrist. The role involves conducting eye examinations, diagnosing vision problems, prescribing corrective lenses, and managing ocular health conditions while ensuring excellent patient care and compliance with professional standards. Key Responsibilities: Clinical Duties:

• Conduct comprehensive eye examinations (refractions, binocular vision assessments, etc.).
• Diagnose vision disorders (e.g., myopia, astigmatism, presbyopia) and ocular diseases (e.g., glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy).
• Prescribe corrective lenses, medications, or referrals to ophthalmologists as needed.
• Fit and advise on contact lenses (including specialty fits if required).
• Use diagnostic equipment (e.g., OCT, visual field testers, tonometry).
• Monitor and manage chronic eye conditions.
• Provide pre- and post-operative care for cataract/LASIK patients (if applicable).

Patient Care & Communication:

• Deliver clear, empathetic explanations of diagnoses and treatment plans.
• Address patient concerns and questions about eye health, vision correction, and lifestyle needs.
• Maintain accurate and confidential patient records (following GDPR/local regulations).

Professional & Administrative Tasks:

• Adhere to GOC (General Optical Council) standards and local healthcare guidelines.
• Collaborate with opticians, assistants, and other healthcare professionals.
• Assist with inventory management of lenses, frames, and clinical supplies.
• Participate in clinical audits or practice improvement initiatives.

Requirements: Essential:

• Qualified Optometrist registered with the General Optical Council (GOC).
• Proven experience in a similar optometry role (community practice, hospital, or clinic).
• Strong clinical skills with proficiency in refraction, slit-lamp exams, and ocular health assessments.
• Excellent communication and patient rapport skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
