Technical Superintendent

Dubai, DU, AE, United Arab Emirates

Job Description

Technical Operations & Maintenance

Monitor assigned vessels' technical operations and maintenance. Liaise with Masters and Chief Engineers regarding maintenance programs and operational matters. Inspect vessels under charge regularly. Monitor vessel performance through monthly return reports and inspections to maintain optimum maintenance levels. Identify and analyze reasons for excessive/unusual wear and tear and develop corrective measures in consultation with the Technical Manager. Monitor technical performance, including consumption of spares, lubricants, and bunkers, ensuring inefficiencies are not caused by vessel condition.

Surveys, Repairs & Dry Docking

Monitor survey cycles and statutory survey requirements, and personally attend key surveys onboard. Plan regular and special surveys, repairs, and dry docking in advance to achieve maximum time and cost efficiency. Control repair volumes, prepare specifications for repairs at external workshops, and organize required equipment and supplies. Provide feedback on repair-related purchases and encourage ship staff to resolve issues onboard when feasible.

Budgeting & Cost Control

Provide detailed operating budgets for maintenance, dry docking, and special surveys. Initiate follow-up actions to keep costs within budgeted parameters. Maintain current cost data from various sources in cooperation with the Procurement department. Draw timely attention of principals to potential additional costs outside the budget. Advise ships under control on budgeted versus actual costs for technical items. Reduce costs by motivating ship staff and improving cost awareness through regular communication on the cost of stores and spares.

Compliance & Certification

Ensure the validity of class, international, national, and specific vessel certificates. Stay updated on statutory, class, and regulatory requirements, including changes and developments. Handle registration, reflagging, sale, and purchase matters in line with flag requirements.

Safety & Management Systems

Continuously update, instruct, and advise ship staff on implementation of company requirements and regulations. Review the effectiveness of the company's SMS system and discuss implementation with Masters during inspections. Ensure all forms are completed accurately, filed onboard, and forwarded to the office.

Requirements

Minimum 2 years' experience in the UAE as a Technical Superintendent managing container vessels. Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture (mandatory).
