  • To maintain and enhance professional development and academic quality in the teaching centre, through the management of in-house teacher development programme and support
  • To promote and ensure quality teaching and effective learning of English
  • To provide learners with a rewarding and stimulating English language learning experience

Job Overview
All our full-time teachers teach both adult and Young Learner classes, so experience of and an interest in teaching children is important. The Young Learner programme is the largest area of activity and is well established with an excellent range of supplementary materials and professional support. We believe in continual assessment to gauge students\' progress and we keep in touch with parents through regular communication and end of term consultations when possible
Accountabilities
  • Teaching: To plan, prepare and deliver up to 24 hours of English language classes and materials and to take account of individual learning styles and provide an environment conducive to learning. Substitute for sick teachers as required and as per local BC Bahrain arrangements
  • Feedback: To assess students\xe2\x80\x99 competence/monitor student progress and give feedback to students/parents/sponsors on student performance to allow students and teachers to take action and to encourage student autonomy
  • Pedagogy: To keep updated professionally to ensure high standards are maintained so that the British Council remains at the forefront of best ELT practice.
  • Cultural relations: To contribute to the development of mutually beneficial relationships between Bahrain and the UK by enhancing students\' understanding of the contemporary UK and by promoting the full range of British Council services and activities.
  • Quality in the Classroom: To contribute to the evaluation, development, and improvement of English language courses, materials, and related services in order to meet student needs as expressed through feedback and in line with local Quality in the Classroom initiatives.
  • Administrative duties: To complete teaching-related administrative tasks to specified standards.


Qualifications

Essentials
  • Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Cert. TESOL
  • Degree in any subject from a recognised university.


Desirables
  • Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Dip. TESOL
  • Cambridge YL extension.

Work Experience
  • At least two years experience of ELT after initial training (eg. CELTA) which must include experience teaching EFL to Young Learners as well as Adults.


Language Requirements
  • All 5 Technical Teacher Skills at level 1.
  • English language ability at B9 IELTS or native speaker.


Salary & Benefits
  • Salary: BHD776 to BHD1040 per month (Based on qualification & experience)
  • Housing allowance: You will be eligible for an accommodation allowance depending on your status :
    • Accompanied: BHD 530
    • Unaccompanied: BHD 420
    • If you are part of a teaching couple who are both employed on full-time fixed-term contracts with the British council then only one person will be paid the accompanied allowance. You are responsible for identifying appropriate accommodation, entering into an appropriate rental or other accommodation agreement, and the payment of all costs (including rent and utilities) associated with the accommodation.
  • Medical allowance: Covered under the terms of the current local medical insurance scheme (staff and dependents under 18).
  • Annual Allowance: 35 working days leave to be taken at times that suit operational needs. Staff also receive official British Council public holidays up to a maximum of fourteen per year. On occasions when public holidays fall on a weekend and the term schedule does not permit time off in lieu (TOIL) immediately, those TOIL days are added to the annual leave allowance, therefore allowing for extended breaks outside of term/registration periods. Official holidays do not include Christmas or Easter and teachers will be expected to work these days if they fall during the term.
  • Settling-in allowance: The allowance is 7% of the employee\xe2\x80\x99s annual base salary if single and for accompanied 10% of base salary. If income tax is liable on the allowance in the host location the allowance will be grossed up. The settling-in allowance is capped at \xc2\xa38,000.
    The settling-in allowance is designed to support the employee for costs they may incur as a result of relocating. It is a contribution only and is not intended to necessarily cover all the cost of the move. Employees will receive the allowance as a one-off net payment with their first month\xe2\x80\x99s salary in the host country.
  • If you are accompanied by a spouse who is also on a British Council contract, then this allowance will be calculated on the higher salary of either spouse.
  • You will also receive up to fourteen days\xe2\x80\x99 self-catering accommodation if permanent accommodation is not available on your first arrival.
Additional information
  • Contract Duration: 2 Years
  • Teaching Hours: 24 hours per week
  • Work Schedule: Teachers are timetabled for up to 24 hours of teaching every week. They are expected to work five days a week with two consecutive weekend days. Current shift patterns are Saturday to Wednesday and Tuesday to Saturday. The classes are scheduled from 1000 to 1700 on Fridays and Saturdays and from 1530 to 2100 on weekdays.
  • All expatriates require sponsorship in order to work in Bahrain. While the British Council Bahrain does not in any way discriminate against candidates on grounds of sexual orientation, marital status or age, it is important for applicants to be aware of local legislation. According to local Bahraini law, it is not possible to secure a work visa for anyone over the age of 60, nor for male dependent spouses or same-sex partners
