Student Pharmacist (Intern)
Position Title: Student Pharmacist / Pharmacy Intern
Reports To: Pharmacy Manager / Preceptor Pharmacist
Position Type: Part-Time / Internship (Non-Exempt)
Objective:
The Student Pharmacist is an integral part of the pharmacy team, working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist to gain practical, hands-on experience in all aspects of pharmacy operations. This role is designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, allowing the intern to develop essential skills in patient care, pharmacy law, and medication dispensing.
Key Responsibilities:
Technical & Dispensing Duties:

  • Assist pharmacists in preparing and dispensing prescription medications accurately and efficiently under direct supervision.
  • Perform data entry of new prescriptions and patient information into the pharmacy software system.
  • Manage inventory: receive and stock pharmaceutical supplies, perform cycle counts, and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
  • Operate and maintain pharmacy equipment (e.g., tablet counters, label printers).
  • Process third-party insurance claims and address simple billing issues.
Patient Service & Support:
  • Greet customers and patients, receive written prescriptions or refill requests, and provide courteous service at the drop-off and pick-up windows.
  • Answer telephone calls, field basic inquiries, and direct calls to the appropriate staff member.
  • Assist patients at the retail counter with over-the-counter (OTC) product selections under the guidance of the pharmacist.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations at all times.
Clinical Support (under direct pharmacist supervision):
  • Participate in medication therapy management (MTM) and patient counseling sessions as an observer and active learner.
  • Assist in conducting health and wellness screenings (e.g., blood pressure, blood glucose monitoring).
  • Support immunization efforts by handling administrative tasks (scheduling, documentation).
Professional Development:
  • Actively apply academic knowledge to real-world pharmacy practice.
  • Seek learning opportunities and ask questions to deepen understanding of pharmacotherapy, pharmacy law, and ethics.
  • Complete all tasks as assigned by the preceptor pharmacist to fulfill academic internship requirements.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program in good academic standing.
  • Must hold a valid Pharmacy Intern license in the state of practice.
  • Strong desire to learn and develop professional skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Basic mathematical proficiency and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Proficiency with computers and pharmacy software is a plus.
