Strategic Sourcing Manager - Packaging, Consumables & Paper Bag Manufacturing

Role Summary - Strategic Sourcing Manager

We are seeking an experienced sourcing professional to lead procurement activities across all packaging categories, consumables, and raw materials used in paper bag manufacturing. The role will initially support affiliated businesses, with a longer-term objective to develop sourcing solutions for third-party customers. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing supplier relationships, controlling and optimising costs, and ensuring continuity of supply, while contributing to the development of a scalable and commercially viable sourcing function.

Key Responsibilities - Strategic Sourcing Manager

Sourcing Strategy

Develop and implement sourcing strategies across a broad range of packaging formats (e.g. bags, flexible films, rigid containers, cartons), consumables (e.g. adhesives, inks, tapes, paper plates, cups), and core materials used in paper bag production (e.g. kraft paper, ink, water-based glues). Identify and assess suppliers across relevant markets, ensuring alignment with quality, cost, and sustainability objectives. Support innovation and product development by sourcing new materials and technologies suitable for manufacturing and packaging operations.

Supplier Management

Build and maintain effective relationships with manufacturers, converters, and distributors across packaging and consumables supply chains. Negotiate commercial terms including pricing, lead times, and service levels, ensuring clarity and fairness. Monitor supplier performance using agreed KPIs such as delivery reliability, quality standards, and responsiveness, and address issues constructively.

Procurement & Commercial Negotiation

Lead procurement activities from specification through to order placement and delivery, ensuring compliance with internal controls. Negotiate pricing and terms with a focus on long-term value and supply chain resilience. Work with finance and operations to ensure accurate cost tracking and alignment with business plans.

Market Awareness

Stay informed about developments in raw material markets (e.g. paper pulp, polymers, coatings), packaging trends, and supply chain risks. Use trade publications, supplier intelligence, and industry networks to inform sourcing decisions and anticipate challenges. Awareness of Legislation and changes affecting the packaging industry to determine and influence cost effective decisions in product choice.

Internal Collaboration

Work closely with production, logistics, and finance teams to ensure sourcing decisions support operational planning and inventory management. Participate in forecasting and demand planning to improve supply continuity and reduce waste.

Compliance & Reporting

Ensure all sourcing activities comply with company policies and applicable international standards and regulations (e.g. ISO, REACH, FSC, environmental certifications). Maintain accurate records and provide regular reporting on supplier performance, cost trends, and sourcing outcomes. BRC and in line with ethical sourcing policies.

Third-Party Customer Development

Identify opportunities to offer sourcing services to non-affiliated businesses, including independent retailers and manufacturers. Collaborate with commercial teams to develop tailored proposals and pilot projects for external customers. Help build a scalable model for third-party sourcing support, including onboarding and account management processes

Requirements:

Proven experience in strategic sourcing, purchasing, and negotiation, particularly in the packaging industry Ideally qualified to IPS accreditation (Institute of Purchase and Supply) Strong understanding of base packaging materials, related consumables and production methods, including those used in paper bag manufacturing Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP) and Microsoft Office Excellent English communication skills - both written and oral (this is a critical requirement) Ability to work independently and meet performance targets Experience working with affiliated companies and international clients Preferably has existing global contacts in the packaging and sourcing industry Strong commercial acumen and ability to identify new business opportunities Attention to detail at all levels of the sourcing cycle
