Job Purpose
The Construction Storekeeper is responsible for efficiently managing and controlling all materials, tools, and equipment on the construction site. This role ensures the availability of required items, maintains accurate inventory records, ensures safe storage practices, and supports the smooth operation of the project by minimizing downtime and preventing loss or misuse of assets.
Key Responsibilities
1. Inventory & Stock Control
Receive, inspect, and record all incoming materials, tools, and equipment against purchase orders and delivery notes.
Issue materials, tools, and PPE to site personnel against authorized requisitions or work orders.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date stock records (both manual and digital) using inventory management systems or spreadsheets.
Conduct regular stock takes (cycle counts) and comprehensive physical inventory audits.
Monitor stock levels and initiate re-ordering of consumables and standard items to prevent shortages.
Identify and report on slow-moving, obsolete, or surplus stock.
2. Storage & Warehouse Management
Organize and maintain a clean, safe, and secure storage area (warehouse, containers, yard).
Implement a systematic storage system (e.g., labeled racks, bins, zones) for easy identification and retrieval.
Ensure all materials are stored correctly according to their nature (e.g., weather-sensitive, hazardous, high-value).
Operate material handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks) safely and hold relevant certifications if required.
Manage the storage and documentation of hazardous materials (MSDS/SDS compliance).
3. Tools & Equipment Management
Check tools and equipment in and out to authorized personnel.
Maintain a register of all site tools and equipment, including condition and calibration status.
Schedule and facilitate routine maintenance, servicing, and calibration of tools and equipment.
Tag and report damaged or faulty equipment for repair or replacement.
4. Documentation & Reporting
Process and file all documentation related to goods receipt, issues, returns, and transfers.
Prepare daily/weekly reports on stock status, issues, and shortages.
Assist in verifying supplier invoices against delivery records.
Maintain records for fuel consumption, if applicable.
5. Safety, Compliance & Team Support
Enforce strict safety standards in the store area (housekeeping, signage, PPE use).
Ensure compliance with company policies and relevant regulations (OSHA, local safety codes).
Coordinate with site supervisors and project managers to understand upcoming material needs.
Train and guide new employees on store procedures and issue protocols.
Act as the point of contact for suppliers and logistics providers for site deliveries.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification in warehouse/inventory management is a plus.
Proven experience (2-5 years) as a storekeeper, warehouse assistant, or similar role
in the construction industry
.
Strong knowledge of construction materials, tools, and equipment.
Proficiency in inventory software, Microsoft Office (especially Excel), and data entry.
Experience operating forklifts and other warehouse equipment (with valid certification if required).
Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Desirable:
Vocational training in logistics, supply chain, or warehouse management.
Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations on construction sites.
Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle).
Valid driver's license.
