Steel Fixer

Responsibilities include reading and interpreting technical plans, cutting and bending steel to specification, tying rebar together, and ensuring the accurate positioning and alignment of the steel framework.

Key Responsibilities

Reading blueprints and specifications:

Interpreting engineering plans to understand the required shape, size, and placement of steel reinforcement.

Measuring, cutting, and bending steel:

Using hand tools and power tools to prepare steel rebar and mesh to the correct dimensions and shapes.

Positioning and tying rebar:

Laying out and securing steel bars and mesh in concrete forms, using wire, clips, or welding to build up the reinforcement structure.

Installing supports and formwork:

Placing spacers and chairs to support the rebar, and sometimes assisting with the setup of wooden formwork that holds the concrete.

Ensuring stability:

Securing the steel reinforcement to concrete bases and checking that the installed structure is stable, strong, and correctly aligned.

Tool and equipment maintenance:

Keeping hand and power tools, as well as other equipment, in good working condition.
Typical Work Environment & Collaboration

Diverse construction sites:

Working on a variety of projects, including commercial buildings, high-rise structures, roads, bridges, and other large-scale developments.

Teamwork:

Collaborating closely with engineering designers, other steel fixers, steel erectors, and general construction workers to ensure projects run smoothly.

Required Skills & Qualities

Technical understanding:

Knowledge of construction techniques and the load-bearing capabilities of different metals and designs.

Attention to detail:

Meticulousness in following plans and ensuring precision in the placement and assembly of steel.

Physical fitness:

Stamina and strength to work with heavy materials and perform demanding physical tasks in various environments.

Safety awareness:

Adherence to safety procedures and the use of appropriate protective gear.
