Specialist Neuropathologist (ft)

Job Description

Neuropathologists commonly work with other physicians to determine the cause of symptoms related to brain or spinal cord disorders. They may also assist surgeons during surgery by identifying areas of concern that should be removed or preserved.

Neuropathologists have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:
  • Explaining results of tests to doctors and families during consultations
  • Performing autopsies to determine the cause of death in patients with undiagnosed conditions
  • Order additional tests such as MRI scans, CT scans, and blood tests to help diagnose specific conditions
  • Conducting research to further understand the causes of diseases or disorders
  • Identifying abnormalities in brain tissue samples taken from surgical biopsies or post-mortem examinations of brains
  • Reviewing medical records for patients who have been diagnosed with neurological disorders such as Alzheimer\xe2\x80\x99s disease or Parkinson\xe2\x80\x99s disease
  • Conducting tests to determine whether a patient has a condition that might be treatable with surgery or other forms of treatment.
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Examine brain, spinal cord, and nerve tissue to determine the presence of disease
  • Study changes in cells and tissues to diagnose neurological conditions
  • Develop treatment plans for patients with nervous system disorders
  • Prescribe medication and other therapies to alleviate symptoms
  • Monitor patients\xe2\x80\x99 progress and adjust treatments as needed
  • Keep abreast of new developments in the field through research and reading professional journals
  • Write scientific papers to share findings with colleagues
  • Teach medical students and residents
  • Serve on hospital committees
  • Give lectures to community groups
  • Consult with other physicians to provide second opinions
  • Testify in court as an expert witness.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
  • Fellowship training in neuropathology
  • Additional certification in Clinical Pathology (CP)
  • Experience with immunohistochemistry, molecular diagnostics, and/or electron microscopy
  • Academic rank of Associate Professor or higher
