Job Title: Shuttering Carpenter
Employment Type: Full-time or Part-Time
Reports To: Site Supervisor / Construction Foreman
Job Summary:
A Shuttering Carpenter is responsible for constructing the formwork and molds into which concrete is poured to create structural elements such as columns, beams, walls, and slabs. This role requires precise measurement, carpentry skills, and knowledge of construction processes to ensure safe and accurate work.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Formwork Construction:
Build and assemble shuttering (formwork) using wood, plywood, steel, or plastic.
Shape and support molds for concrete according to project specifications.
Blueprint Interpretation:
Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and construction plans.
Measure and mark guidelines to layout work according to drawings.
Installation and Alignment:
Erect formwork structures in proper alignment and level.
Ensure bracing and anchoring are secure to withstand concrete pressure.
Concrete Pouring Support:
Assist during the concrete pour to ensure molds hold their shape.
Monitor formwork for leaks or deformations during pouring.
Dismantling and Reuse:
Safely strip formwork after the concrete sets.
Clean, repair, and prepare materials for reuse if possible.
Safety Compliance:
Follow site safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
Ensure scaffolding and platforms used are safe and secure.
Tool Handling:
Use hand and power tools such as saws, hammers, drills, levels, etc.
Maintain tools and equipment in working order.
Team Collaboration:
Work closely with site supervisors, engineers, steel fixers, and other tradespeople.
Report any construction issues or material shortages.
Qualifications and Skills:
Proven experience as a shuttering/formwork carpenter.
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
Skilled in carpentry techniques and concrete formwork.
Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy materials.
Basic math and measurement skills.
Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures.
Vocational training or apprenticeship (preferred but not always required).
