The role

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior/Principal Technical Safety Engineer to join our Iraq Operations Business. This role is full time residential based in Sharjah, UAE

Wood has been awarded a general engineering contract to support an International Client operator to deliver a portfolio of onshore capital projects by provision of engineering and project management services (including EPC contract management), as well as Supply Chain, Construction and Commissioning support from Wood Iraq and UAE offices.


Projects include both Greenfield and Brownfield modification projects and integrating low-carbon solutions to support our client's energy transition and emissions reduction goals.

Key Objectives

Contributing to technical delivery of engineering excellence through: Executing assigned scopes of work Providing discipline expertise to the business Supporting and supervising task delegation to team Uses technical knowledge to perform engineering assignments and produce engineering deliverables including complex problems. Completes almost any engineering tasks with minimal guidance and direction. May serve as the primary discipline engineer or discipline technical authority on projects with small to medium complexity. Performs engineering assignments, usually representing a significant portion of a larger project. Selects engineering techniques to solve problems and makes design recommendations Requires mature professional knowledge in planning and conducting assignments having scope for coordination of difficult tasks Applies specific area(s) of expertise in own discipline area In consultancy businesses, may review and manages complex projects within area of expertise or of a multi-disciplinary nature

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities:

Executing Assigned Scopes of Work:

Participates as a team member in a specific phase of a broad engineering assignment Directs preparation of appropriate documentation for assigned projects Ensures successful completion of the assigned project/phase within the budgeted time and cost constraints Participates in defining engineering approaches, and in planning and scheduling work Evaluates problems, organizes investigations and establishes general performance specifications for components, equipment, systems, processes Check Engineering calculations as well as check all drawings in accordance with industry codes and standards; Assist with the development of less senior Technical Professionals Adhere to and comply with relevant discipline specific procedures and provide feedback for continuous improvement Participate in audits and incident investigations as required Performs complex engineering tasks related to specific units of major projects Participate in site visits, project review meetings, design reviews and other workshops as required. Organising and active participation in design reviews

Providing discipline expertise:

Solves problems requiring development of new approaches or new uses for existing approaches; exercises mature professional judgment in evaluating and selecting technical strategic options As necessary, modifies established guidelines, devises new approaches, applies existing criteria in new ways and draws conclusions from comparative situations. Regularly functions as a technical leader or significant contributor to a major complex problem or project Produces innovative ideas and solves problems requiring development of new approaches or new uses for existing approaches Consistently called on to use creativity and professional judgement to formulate results based on engineering standards, experience and constructive thinking Develops unique solutions for complex technical problems Anticipates potential problems and takes the initiative to solve complex problems through creative thinking and creative use of internal and external resources both inside and outside of discipline expertise Exercises mature professional judgement in identifying the implications of experimental results Understands customer needs and applies technical solutions to meet goals Provide technical input and support to proposals as required

Supporting and Supervising task delegation to team:

May supervise a small work group consisting of technical/professional staff with some coaching from own supervisor, or may provide advice and guidance in area of specialization to others Assist in performing managerial tasks as requested, such as assigning tasks to engineers; planning and coordinating portions of the engineering work; preparing scopes, schedules, and budgets; attending project meetings; and developing lesser-experienced technical professionals Discusses with other senior engineers to agree priorities and implications on work of others Approves work schedules and makes recommendations for increased resources and special equipment Makes commitments on acceptance of projects, completion dates, resources and staff required to meet goals Coordinates the activities of engineering and design groups assigned to small projects Participates in developing deadlines, projects and work to be done May manage one or more small projects, with responsibility for cost, schedule, resources allocation and risk Provide appropriate HSSE leadership including compliance with site and office safety requirements and technical/design safety requirements

Develops productive, collaborative relationships of trust within and across projects, offices and regions, as well as with functions Engage with inter-discipline community and promote discipline including: networking / knowledge sharing Often required to persuade individuals with differing positions or interest to change criteria or methods, accept findings or reach agreement on technical points Solicits understanding and support of managers for major projects and uses available technical resources

External:

Establishing and / or maintaining an awareness of external stakeholders including: industry bodies, academia, vendors Builds relationships with customers as appropriate Seeks out new avenues for building external relationships; maintains on-going contacts with existing relationships; coaches others on relationship management issues

Level of Influence & Decision-Making Authority:

Work is assigned in terms of goals and priorities; duties are carried out within broad guidelines and unusual or complex matters are generally referred to more senior authority. Actions and decisions typically have a significant influence on the technical, operational and financial results of one or more projects or departments Translates standards and guidelines into practical actions No direct reports but frequently serves as a technical resource May be required to supervise teams and provide technical guidance to drafters/designers and technical professionals with some coaching from own supervisor Accountable for own targets Overall performance is reviewed and evaluated

Expected:

B.Sc. or equivalent degree in the Engineering discipline from an accredited university. Minimum of 10+ years relevant experience in major Brownfield oil & gas projects, including at least five (5) years in similar position

Knowledge, skills and experience:

Specific experience in Oil and Gas projects across their lifecycle in the GCC region, preferred Pre-FEED, FEED experience is required Detailed Engineering experience is preferred

Ability to provide guidance and direction to project team, managing, motivating and mentoring professional engineering specialists Ability to discover issues and recommend solutions to technical and commercial issues uncovered during course of performing assignments Proficient user of relevant software and calculation templates Professional level of ability in the application of standards, processes and procedures and how they are used in work execution Professional level of knowledge of applicable codes and standards Technically competent in own discipline, pursues continuous professional development of skills and knowledge according to standards Maintains own knowledge of relevant regulatory framework, legislation changes, initiatives and industry technology developments and promotes to direct reports. Applies mature professional knowledge and experience to assignments where issues and factors to be considered may be characterized by unsual demands and require additional evaluation to establish the nature and scope of the problem Demonstrated ability to apply advanced laws, principles, mathematics or industry knowledge in the improvement and development of designs Demonstrated skills in persuasion, negotiation, motivation and communication Demonstrated proficiency in project planning Possess a working knowledge of the various Business Units, Functions, Sectors and services offered within business area, and general understanding of other Wood business offerings
