Rig Mechanic
Job Title: Rig Mechanic
Reporting To: Barge Engineer / Chief Mechanic
Location: Offshore Drilling Rig (Machine Shop and All Mechanical Areas)
Rotation: Typically 14/21 days on, 14/21 days off
1. Overview:
The Rig Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all mechanical equipment on the rig. This encompasses a vast range of machinery, from the massive diesel engines and mud pumps to the complex braking systems of the drawworks and the hydraulic systems throughout the vessel. They are the backbone of the rig's mechanical integrity.
2. Key Responsibilities:

• Engine Maintenance: Performs maintenance, overhaul, and repair of the rig's prime movers, including large diesel engines for power generation and emergency generators.
• Pump Systems: Maintains and repairs all pumps on the rig, including the critical triplex mud pumps, centrifugal pumps, and hydraulic power units.
• Drilling Equipment: Services the mechanical components of the drawworks, top drive, rotary table, blowout preventer (BOP) hydraulic accumulators, and other drilling machinery.
• Power Transmission: Works on power transmission systems such as clutches, brakes, chains, sprockets, and gearboxes.
• Hydraulic Systems: Troubleshoots and repairs complex hydraulic systems, including cylinders, valves, pumps, and motors.
• Preventive Maintenance: Executes a scheduled preventive maintenance program for all mechanical equipment, including lubrication and vibration analysis.
• Fabrication & Repair: Uses machine shop tools (lathes, milling machines, welding equipment) to fabricate or repair parts as needed.
• Troubleshooting: Diagnoses mechanical failures, disassembles equipment, replaces worn or defective parts, and reassembles to operational condition.

3. Qualifications & Skills:

• Trade Certification: A recognized mechanical trade certification (e.g., Journeyman Mechanic) is mandatory.
• Experience: Several years of experience as a mechanic, with heavy industrial or offshore experience being crucial.
• Technical Knowledge: Profound knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and diesel engine technology.
• Practical Skills: Highly skilled in using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and machine shop equipment. Welding and fabrication skills are a significant asset.
• Physical Strength: The role requires significant physical strength and stamina to handle heavy components.
