The Core Technology Platforms (CTP) at New York University Abu Dhabi are multidisciplinary, centrally organized research facilities comprised of 12 core laboratories. We provide access to hundreds of research equipment, user training, and research support to NYU Abu Dhabi's academic community and collaborators. The CTP seeks to appoint a Research Instrumentation Scientist 1 - Electron Microscopy for a Fixed Term of three years, renewable.

The successful candidate will be a member of NYU Abu Dhabi Core Technology Platforms (CTP) Operations reporting to the Executive Director of the CTP department.

The candidate:

The successful candidate will manage the operation of the Electron Microscopy (EM) Core lab and work with researchers and faculty members and assist them in experiments relevant to EM techniques.

The primary duties will include:

• Overseeing the operation of the Electron Microscopy Core lab;
• Providing scientific and technical assistance to faculty, researchers, and students;
• Training and supervising researchers and students on the EM equipment;
• Setting up experiments and analyzing the data;
• Managing the maintenance of the EM and relevant equipment in CTP;
• Preparing training materials for the equipment;
• Developing new protocols when requested by users and standardizing them for routine use by the core;
• Supervising the setup, installation, and procurement of EM related equipment;
• Managing the supplies, reagents purchases, and stocks for the relevant CTP;
• Evaluating existing equipment and recommending upgrades and new technologies;
• Assessing potential demands for new research activities that will support researchers' needs and expectations;
• Developing and maintaining the safety protocols and the standard operating procedures;
• Keeping up to date with the advancements in the field of EM and suggesting new techniques to improve the research capabilities.

The candidate must demonstrate strong knowledge, understanding, and experience with research laboratory instrumentation and must have strong background and experience in the operation of the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Dual Beam (FIB/SEM) systems. The candidate is expected to work with researchers in all sciences disciplines, such as chemistry, biology, physics, and materials science and engineering. The candidate must have a good understanding and experience of sample preparation techniques and Electron microscopy analysis for biological and material science based samples. Have a sound knowledge of in-situ EM experiments.

The candidate must be willing to be trained on additional equipment, operate them, and travel locally and internationally if needed.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensing, or Training

• PhD degree in Science, Engineering, or relevant fields. Research background in TEM and SEM/FIB systems techniques.
• A sound understanding of the sample preparation techniques for EM analysis.
• Knowledge of EM related sofware for EDS and Tomography analysis.

Required Work and Related Experience

• Three years of relevant experience, which must include extensive experience with TEM, Dual Beam, SEM.
• Experience with analytical EM techniques EDS and STEM.
• Experience conducting scientific research that includes methods and technologies associated with analytical Electron Microscopy.
• Experience in sample preparation methods.
• Have a sound understanding of in-situ EM experiments.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with solid written, verbal and presentation skills.
• Good judgment skills and the ability to solve problems.

Preferred Work and Related Experience

• More than 5 years of working experience in research institutes/universities is preferred. Analytical core lab management is advantageous.
• Experience in research in the form of journal publications and/or patents.
• Experience in managing technicians and students.
• Ability to manage financial and information resources.
