Essential Criteria
  • Master of Science from a reputable university in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, chemical engineering, or related discipline
  • Experience in undertaking assigned research tasks and starting to manage own workload.
  • Contributing to scientific papers and academic journal articles
  • A willingness to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture
  • Excellent English language communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to function as part of a team working on multiple tasks with competing demands and deadlines
  • Well-developed reasoning and problem-solving skills
Desired Criteria
  • Masters gained from and/or experience working in a top 200 QS or THE ranked University
  • At least 1 lead author publication in a Q1 journal in the relevant field
  • Experience contributing to high-impact publications in top 10% journals in the relevant field
Position Overview

KU is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to work on a funded project that focuses on the recovery of technologically critical elements, and metal pollutants, from electronic waste. The project aims to use designer solvents for devising environmentally friendly, highly selective, and practical recovery protocols for precious metal extracts.

As part of the project, the researcher will have access to state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities at the KU Center for Catalysis and Separation ( ), KU Center for Membranes and Advanced Water Technology ( ), and KU Research Laboratories Facilities ( ). The research associate will also get to work alongside researchers and graduate students from various backgrounds as part of a wider team.

Qualifications

Position Requirements
  • Conduct both fundamental & applied research on the development of deep-eutectic solvent-based liquid-liquid extraction methods for the selective enrichment of precious metal ions from leach liquors of electronic waste materials.
  • Background knowledge in thermodynamics and kinetics of solution equilibria encompassing acid-base, redox, and complexation reactions.
  • Wet lab experience and working knowledge in separation and spectroscopy techniques encompassing liquid-liquid extraction, HPLC, and FTIR.
  • Background and working knowledge in NMR and LCMS are a plus.
  • Ability to operate two or more equipment associated with the above-mentioned techniques and willingness to learn/operate new characterization tools that are necessary for the successful delivery of critical aspects of the research project.
  • Assist with training UG students assigned to the project and support fellow researchers.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and the Research Laboratories department.
  • Adhere to/ spread a culture of scientific integrity in all aspects to support the research ecosystem.
  • Adhere to the laboratory environmental health and safety protocols and support the drafting of project-specific standard operating procedures and laboratory risk assessments.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret data, and prepare technical progress reports for the project.
  • Contribute to writing grants/manuscripts/patent applications, and present at conferences.
  • Support procurement activities for the project.
  • Adhere to the University\'s information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly.
