KU is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate (RA) to work on a funded project aiming to develop an Innovative system for the control of dynamic response of bridges. Specifically the RA is expected to work on the development of a \xe2\x80\x9csmart\xe2\x80\x9d device of the passive type, namely moveable shear keys (MSKs) for optimising the dynamic performance of a bridge. The RA will work towards the development of a method for optimising the size of the bridge deck joints with a view to optimising the dynamic response of the bridge. An optimization method will be sought that will lead to the minimum life-cycle cost of the bridge and guide the possible strengthening of the bridge subsequent to earthquake damage.. The methodology will be applied to a selected number of typical bridges subjected to various types of seismic ground motion.
Position Requirements
Design according to the Eurocode system a bridge where the end joint gap size is expected to play a significant role in its seismic performance
Develop a life-cycle cost based methodology for the optimization of the joint gap in bridges subjected to seismic motion
Carry out systematic nonlinear response-history analyses of typical bridges and use the results to optimise the joint gaps using the developed methodology
Adhere to the University\'s information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager
