As a Research Technician and a member of the newly established Tissue Bank team at the Sharjah Institute for Medical Research (SIMR), you will play a key role in supporting tissue banking operations. Your responsibilities will include conducting routine histology, such as sectioning FFPE blocks using microtomy, sectioning fresh frozen tissue with a cryostat, performing H&E staining, and immunohistochemistry. Additionally, you will be involved in molecular pathology techniques, including DNA and RNA extraction, fluorescent microscopy, PCR, qRT-PCR, DNA and RNA library construction, gene cloning, tissue culture, transfection experiments, and the use of Fluidigm for multiplex genomic analysis.
The ideal candidate will hold an MSc in biomedical science and have proven work experience in histology and basic molecular pathology. Experience in micro and macro dissection, as well as skills in DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, Sanger Sequencing, and fluorescent microscopy, is desirable. A basic understanding of Microsoft Excel and Access databases, alongside a strong awareness of ethics in medical research, is also required.
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES & EXPECTATIONS
Manage the day to day running of the Tissue Bank including sample entry, storage and retrieval
Carry out routine histology tasks such as microtomy, H&E staining and immunohistochemistry staining to support various histopathology-based projects
Manage the ordering, stock taking and auditing of the Tissue Bank
Perform molecular pathology techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction from various tissues stored in the tissue bank
Support all Tissue Bank research projects assigned to him/her by groups in RIMHS and the College of Medicine
REQUIRED SKILLS
Extensive experience in microtomy, cryostat, H&E staining and immunohistochemistry
Basic use of Microsoft Excel and Access and basic understanding of ethics in medical research
Ability to carry out basic molecular pathology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction from tissue
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that enable him/her to smoothly interact with staff and faculty at the institute and College of Medicine
DNA and RNA library construction for NGS including the use of Fluidigm
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
BSc or MSc in a Biomedical or Life science subject with experience in histology and histotechnology
