Job Description

The Information Systems program at Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ) is seeking a motivated and skilled Research Assistant to support the development of an AI-powered chatbot designed to assist with academic advising. Position: Part-time Research Assistant Location: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMUQ) Duration: Summer 2025, with possibility of extension Start Date: May 2025 Compensation: Competitive hourly rate Project Overview: The goal of this project is to build a conversational AI system that can respond to common student advising queries related to course selection, degree requirements, minors, concentrations, deadlines, and university policies. The chatbot will be trained on relevant CMU academic data and designed to offer reliable and helpful responses in a user-friendly interface. Responsibilities:

Assist in designing and building a chatbot prototype using relevant AI and NLP tools

Curate, structure, and preprocess advising-related datasets from different sources

Fine-tune or integrate with language models (e.g., GPT, Rasa, Dialogflow, etc.)

Develop agentic AI capabilities to enable the chatbot to take proactive, helpful actions where appropriate

Evaluate chatbot performance and iterate based on user testing

Work closely with faculty and student advisor to align the system with real advising needs Qualifications:

Strong programming skills (Python preferred)

Strong deep learning, model fine-tuning, and NLP

Interest in AI, education technology, or student success tools

Experience with chatbot frameworks or NLP libraries is a plus

Strong communication and problem-solving skills
