The Department of Chemistry at the College of Science, United Arab Emirates University, seeks to recruit a research assistant to work on the synthesis and development of enzyme inhibitors under the supervision of Dr. Abbas Hassan. The successful applicant will carry out an exciting project involving the development of new enzyme inhibitors for nucleotide triphosphate diphosphohydrolase (NTPDases) based on the rationale design of the quinazoline pharmacophore. A divergent approach will be utilized to systematically alter the quinazoline pharmacophore for selective inhibition of the isozymes NTPDase1, -2, -3, and -8. The candidate will employ multistep organic synthesis, including heterocyclic synthesis and derivatization through transition metal catalysis. The candidate will work on multiple aspects of the project simultaneously in collaboration with other graduate and PhD-level scientists. The successful candidate will manage projects, provide regular updates, write quarterly project reports, analyze synthesized compounds through spectroscopic techniques, and maintain a safe scientific working environment in the laboratory. The candidate should be detail-oriented, well-organized, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to work independently and as part of a team. The candidate should have a strong background in organic synthesis, a history of working with anhydrous conditions using the Schlenk line, flash column chromatography, and proficiency in analyzing spectroscopic analysis including 1D and 2D NMR, FTIR, and fragmentation patterns for EI MS. This position will begin in July 2025 as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance. Applications will be accepted immediately, and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. All applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and a one-page summary of research accomplishments and the names of two referees, all in one PDF file.
