Job Description

Job Profile:
  • The Registered Nurse is responsible in Assessment, Management and Provision of Quality Nursing Care to all patients. An active member of the multidisciplinary team and collaborates in the development, execution, and evaluation of the multidisciplinary plan of care or critical pathway.
  • Provide care for primarily adult patients before and after surgical procedures. They coordinate healthcare plans with medical professionals, administer medications, and educate patients on surgical procedures.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Provides direct care to assigned patients.
  • Takes the nursing history, summarizes data, and states nursing diagnoses/ patient care needs.
  • Observes and records signs, symptoms, and behaviours, including the physiological status of patients; presents the assessment of changes, the proposed revision of interventions, and desired outcomes.
  • Integrates nursing interventions into the multidisciplinary plan of care, incorporating appropriate standards of care and practice and patient outcomes.
  • Executes physician\'s orders for all assigned patients; safely and properly administers medications and treatments.
  • Implements safe, competent, and efficient patient care within policies, procedures and standards, and interventions as noted on the multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Documents the nursing process to reflect a comprehensive and integrated approach to patient care.
  • Evaluates patient\'s responses to care based on effectiveness of nursing interventions/actions in relationship to established outcomes and consults with Medical Staff regarding clinical variances and recommended changes to the plan of care.
  • Identifies learning needs of patients/families and teaches by adapting standard information to provide individualized and comprehensive teaching-learning. Utilizes the resources of the Teaching-Learning Center as appropriate to meet identified patient, family and/or caregiver needs.
  • Performance measures:
  • Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications by a licensed registered nurse.
  • Educates patients on surgical procedures.
  • Records patients\' medical information and vital signs.
  • Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients and interprets and records electronic displays.
  • Initiates corrective action whenever the patient displays adverse symptomatology.
  • Provides bedside care for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients.
  • Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs.
  • Changes dressings, inserts catheters, starts IVs.
  • Prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient.
  • Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol.
  • Participates in discharge planning.
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
