Job Description

Clinical activities:
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care given to patients in an effective and organized manner in the Inpatient ward.
  • Performs initial assessment and reassessment of patients in the department.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of electronic fetal monitoring using CTG and central monitoring system (ie OB TV)
  • Is able to provide a high standard of care to all Specialties that falls within the hospitals scope of practice.
  • Initiates Intravenous Therapy as per Doctors orders
  • Demonstrates skills in routine care for newborns, rooming in with mothers.
  • Facilitates medical assistance and provides patient care in emergency situations.
  • Participates in emergency code drills and performs when necessary
  • Acts as Team Leader in the absence of the Charge Nurse and is able to delegate tasks as per skills and scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in caring for patients admitted for induction of labor.
  • Monitors early progress of laboring mothers before transferring to labor ward, interprets fetal heart rate and notifies Physician when appropriate for progress or problems.
  • Follows IV protocols as per hospital policy/guidelines
  • Performs post-partum care of mother, performs fundal massage and monitors vital signs, blood loss as needed and promotes newborn/parent bonding
  • Performs the Appropriateness review of medications before preparing and administering medications as required.
  • Responsible for coordinating with the Obstetrician, Neonatologist / Pediatrician and other allied workers to provide comprehensive care to patients.
  • Prepares mothers for cesarean sections and provides pre-operative and post-operative care to all patients requiring surgical procedures
  • Actively promotes and assists mothers with breastfeeding, basic newborn care and patient education.
  • Has skills and knowledge on collection of specimens, bloods for diagnostic testing and critical values
  • Knowledge on ordering blood products and monitors patients when receiving blood products.
  • Knowledge of Obstetric emergencies, nursing management and care as per protocols.
  • Provides appropriate health education to patients and their family. Performs nursing procedures with attention to accuracy, patient safety and comfort, including those requiring strict aseptic technique.
Administrative activities:
  • Fosters and facilitates peer teaching activities in a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform under pressure.
  • Maintains and updates all relevant patient documentation / medical records as per hospital policy and procedure.
  • Follows the reporting mechanisms / chain of command in the nursing services department ensuring all patient care issues are accurately and promptly reported.
  • Participates in new nursing staff orientation to the wards
  • Participates in Quality improvement projects and KPI\xe2\x80\x99s.
  • Completes required nursing competencies annually/ or as per policy
  • Demonstrates an economical approach to the utilization of equipment and supplies while assisting the head nurse to maintain an appropriate ward stock.
  • Responsible for checking crash cart as per the checklist.
  • Completes annual nursing competencies as per hospital policy
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory checklist of medications which include high alert medications and narcotics as per hospital policy.
  • Responsible for maintaining inventory checklist of Hazmat items through the use of Material Safety Data Sheet as per hospital policy.
  • Maintains and updates all relevant patient documentation / medical records as per hospital policy and procedure.
  • Follows the reporting mechanisms / chain of command in the Nursing services department ensuring all patient care issues are accurately and promptly reported.
  • Ensures preventative and ongoing maintenance of equipment is carried out, reporting all failures or deficiencies to the appropriate department head.
  • Demonstrates strict adherence to all hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge and participates in fire safety, patient safety, infection control and the other necessary precautionary measures as per hospital policy.
  • Takes responsibility for professional clinical practice and is actively involved in updating and continuing education.

  • Ability to work flexible shifts.
  • Ability to review procedures and implement new models of service delivery to satisfy client and organizational requirements.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality outcomes and ability to consult with staff regarding continuous improvement.
  • Excellent command of oral and written English. Arabic language advantageous/desirable but not essential.
  • Possess a \xe2\x80\x9ccan do\xe2\x80\x9d and flexible approach.
  • Ability to demonstrate highly developed communication and organizational skills at all levels.
  • Ability to multi task within the team and possess interpersonal and good communication skills.
  • Ability to provide compassionate care that is respectful to patients\xe2\x80\x99 cultural preferences while keeping in line with regulating bodies (HAAD, JCI).
  • Knowledge of computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision and in a team within a complex clinical setting.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of confidentiality policy.
  • Ability to demonstrate self-directed thinking, continued proficiency and initiative in problem solving when providing patient care in the clinical setting.

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing/Diploma in Nursing.
  • Current license in country of origin and with HAAD license to practice in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate.
