Roles and responsibilities

Cost estimation and bidding:

Analyze project drawings to determine quantities of labor, materials, and equipment needed. Prepare detailed cost estimates and budgets for new projects. Develop tender documents and prepare bids for winning new work.

Project financial management:

Track and control project costs from start to finish, ensuring they remain within the budget. Manage and approve payments to contractors and subcontractors. Monitor cash flow and perform cost-value reconciliations.

Contract administration:

Draft and manage contract documents, ensuring all contractual obligations are met. Handle variations to the project's scope, assessing and managing their cost impact. Negotiate contracts and help resolve disputes between parties.

Risk management and reporting:

Identify and assess potential commercial and financial risks. Prepare progress and cost reports for stakeholders. Provide advice on claims, disputes, and contractual issues.

Quality and compliance:

Ensure projects meet legal and quality standards. Liaise with clients, architects, engineers, and other contractors to ensure cost-effectiveness and quality.

Education and experience

Academic qualifications:

A bachelor's degree or diploma in quantity surveying, civil engineering, construction management, or a related field is typically required.

Work experience:

Depending on the role's seniority, a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in construction or project management is often necessary.

Technical and software skills

Cost estimation and budgeting:

Strong ability to estimate costs, prepare detailed budgets, and analyze costs for labor, materials, and subcontractors.

Quantity take-off:

Proficiency in measuring and quantifying materials from drawings, often using tools like AutoCAD and other takeoff software.

BOQ preparation:

Experience in preparing Bills of Quantities accurately and efficiently.

Contract knowledge:

Understanding of construction contracts and legal aspects.

Software proficiency:

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and quantity surveying/estimation software like PlanSwift is crucial.

Soft skills

Analytical and problem-solving:

Strong ability to analyze data, identify risks, and solve problems creatively.

Communication and interpersonal:

Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as strong negotiation and relationship-building skills.

Commercial awareness:

A keen understanding of the commercial aspects of construction projects.

Organizational skills:

The ability to manage multiple projects, plan effectively, and work under pressure.

Attention to detail:

Meticulous attention to detail is essential for accuracy in estimations and cost control.
