Job Description

Summary of Role
The Piping QC Inspector is responsible for ensuring that all piping fabrication, installation, and testing activities comply with project specifications, approved design drawings, relevant codes, and standards. The inspector plays a critical role in preventing defects, ensuring safety, and maintaining the long-term reliability of piping systems through rigorous inspection and documentation at every stage of the construction process.
Key Responsibilities
1. Pre-Inspection & Planning:

  • Review and understand project specifications, piping isometric drawings, P&IDs (Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams), and line lists.
  • Familiarize oneself with all applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.3, B31.1, API 1104, AWS D1.1).
  • Review and approve contractor ITPs (Inspection and Test Plans) and method statements.
  • Verify the qualifications of welders, welding procedures (WPS/PQR), and NDT personnel.
2. In-Process Inspection (IPI):
  • Material Receiving: Verify material certificates (MTCs), grade, size, wall thickness, and condition of pipes, valves, fittings, and supports against requirements. Manage material traceability.
  • Fabrication & Installation:
  • Inspect fit-up, alignment, and preparation of welds (root gap, bevel angle, cleanliness).
  • Verify support installation, alignment, and orientation of piping components.
  • Ensure proper pre-heating procedures are followed when required.
  • Welding Inspection:
  • Perform visual inspections (VT) of welds during and after welding.
  • Monitor and document welding parameters.
  • Identify and report welding defects (e.g., porosity, undercut, cracking).
  • Dimensional Control: Verify piping spool dimensions and overall system alignment against isometric drawings.
3. Final Inspection & Testing:
  • Witness and document hydrostatic, pneumatic, and leak tests. Verify test pressures, hold times, and safety procedures.
  • Verify proper installation of instruments, instruments taps, and bleed ports.
  • Inspect surface preparation and coating/linings for compatibility and application quality.
  • Ensure proper installation of insulation and cladding.
  • Perform final walk-downs and visual inspections of completed systems.
4. Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Coordination:
  • Coordinate with NDT technicians for radiographic testing (RT), ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT), and liquid penetrant testing (PT).
  • Review and interpret NDT reports to accept or reject welds based on acceptance criteria.
5. Documentation & Reporting (CRITICAL FUNCTION):
  • Maintain detailed and accurate inspection records using checklists, reports, and logs.
  • Raise and manage Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) for any deviations from specifications.
  • Complete and sign off on Inspection Test Reports (ITRs) and Quality Dossiers.
  • Compile and organize turnover packages for client submission, ensuring all quality records are complete.
6. Safety & Compliance:
  • Adhere to and promote all company and site safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in safety meetings and audits.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. A degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Welding Technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Certification: Mandatory certification as a AWS/CWI (Certified Welding Inspector) or CSWIP (Certified Senior Welding Inspector). Additional certifications in NDT (e.g., ASNT NDT Level II VT, PT, MT, UT) are highly desirable.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5-8 years of hands-on experience as a Piping QC Inspector in a related industry (Oil & Gas, Construction, etc.).
  • Code Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of ASME B31.3 (Process Piping) is essential. Knowledge of other codes like ASME B31.1 (Power Piping), ASME Section V (NDT), and ASME Section IX (Welding) is a strong advantage.
Key Skills & Competencies
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, P&IDs, and isometries.
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional observational skills to identify defects and non-conformities.
  • Documentation: Meticulous and organized in maintaining quality records and reports.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively report issues to supervisors, engineers, and construction crews.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to identify problems, determine root cause, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Software: Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel). Experience with document management systems is a plus.
  • Physical: Ability to work in a field environment, climb ladders, walk on uneven surfaces, and work in various weather conditions.
