Pumpman / Shaker Man
Job Title: Pumpman / Shaker Man
Reporting To: Derrickman / Driller
Location: Offshore Drilling Rig (Mud Pit Area and Shaker House)
Rotation: Typically 14/21 days on, 14/21 days off
1. Overview:
The Pumpman/Shaker Man is a specialized role focused on the heart of the drilling fluid circulation and cleaning system. This position is critical for maintaining the efficiency and properties of the drilling mud, which directly impacts wellbore stability, drilling speed, and overall safety. The role is hands-on, often messy, and requires constant vigilance.
2. Key Responsibilities:

• Shaker Operation: Monitors and operates the shale shakers, which are the primary devices for removing drill cuttings from the drilling fluid. Adjusts screen mesh and flow rates for optimal separation.
• Mud Property Monitoring: Continuously checks the drilling mud for key properties such as weight, viscosity, and sand content, reporting any deviations to the Derrickman or Mud Engineer.
• Equipment Operation & Monitoring: Operates and monitors other solid control equipment, including:
• Desanders and Desilters (hydrocyclones) for finer solids removal.
• Degasser for removing entrained gases from the mud.
• Centrifuges for ultra-fine separation and weight control.
• Mud Mixing: Assists in mixing new drilling mud and chemical additives as directed by the Mud Engineer or Driller.
• Pump Maintenance: Performs routine maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs on the mud pumps, including checking liners, pistons, valves, and pulsation dampeners.
• Pit Level Monitoring: Closely monitors the mud pit levels to quickly identify any gains or losses, which are critical early indicators of a kick (influx) or lost circulation.
• Housekeeping: Maintains rigorous housekeeping in the mud pit area and shaker house to prevent slips, trips, and falls, and to ensure a safe working environment.

3. Qualifications & Skills:

• Experience: Previous experience as a Roustabout or Floorhand with exposure to mud systems is typically required.
• Technical Aptitude: Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of the principles of solid control equipment and mud hydraulics.
• Vigilance: Ability to remain alert and focused for long periods, meticulously observing equipment and mud returns.
• Physical Stamina: Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting chemical sacks and handling equipment in a demanding environment.
• Teamwork: Must work closely with the Derrickman and Mud Engineer to achieve fluid performance goals.
• Safety Certification: Basic safety certifications (HUET, STCW, etc.) are mandatory.
