Key ResponsibilitiesA Principal Marine Project Engineer typically performs the following duties:
Project Leadership & Management
Leads and oversees the execution of marine and coastal construction works, ensuring compliance with designs, specifications, and schedules.
Manages all aspects of projects from inception through to close-out, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and quality control.
Acts as a Project Manager for small to medium-sized projects or a Technical Manager on large, complex projects.
Identifies potential delays or deviations from the baseline program and develops mitigation actions and recovery plans.
Technical Oversight & Design
Provides specialized technical guidance and engineering judgment for marine infrastructure and facilities, such as quay walls, breakwaters, jetties, dry docks, and offshore platforms.
Reviews and approves technical submittals, shop drawings, material submittals, and as-built documentation for accuracy.
Ensures technical integrity of all engineering design activities and compliance with relevant international standards and regulations (e.g., PIANC, DNV, DNVGL, IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL).
Performs structural analysis of marine structures using industry software (e.g., SACS, SESAM, AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
Coordination & Stakeholder Management
Coordinates with design teams, consultants, contractors, and internal departments to resolve technical issues and design changes.
Serves as the primary engineering interface between the company, clients, regulatory bodies (e.g., Marine Warranty Surveyors or classification societies), and other third parties.
Prepares comprehensive reports, tender documents, specifications, and contract documents (e.g., using FIDIC-based contracts).
HSE & Quality Assurance
Ensures adherence to safety, environmental, and quality requirements through regular site inspections and the implementation of robust HSE plans.
Leads and participates in design verification and quality assurance processes.
Mentorship & Business Development
Guides and mentors junior staff, project engineers, and technicians.
Contributes to business development efforts, including preparing proposals and interacting with clients.
