Position Overview

KU is seeking an experienced & highly motivated Post-doctoral Fellow to work on a funded project aiming to develop an Innovative system for the control of dynamic response of bridges; specifically the Post-doc is expected to work on the development of a \xe2\x80\x9csmart\xe2\x80\x9d device of the semi-active type, namely moveable shear keys (MSKs) for optimising the dynamic performance of a bridge. Various algorithms will be tested to achieve effective regulation, e.g. based on classical, optimal, adaptive or model-predictive control. The developed algorithm will be implemented in an appropriate software (e.g. Matlab) and will be used jointly with a nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis program to optimise the seismic response of typical bridges subjected to ground motions.

Position Requirements

• Develop a semi-active control algorithm that will adjust the width of deck joints in bridges subjected to seismic ground motion, with a view to optimising the dynamic response of the bridge
• Implement the algorithm into appropriate software that will be used jointly with the dynamic analysis software
• Apply the aforementioned software for optimising the design of joints in a number of bridges
• Work independently and in collaboration with senior scientists and graduate students locally and internationally
• Adhere to the University\'s information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly
• Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager

Qualifications

Candidate Profile

Essential Criteria

• PhD in Structural Engineering from a reputable university, preferably from a Civil Engineering Department
• Sound background in Structural Dynamics
• Familiarity with active and semi-active control systems and algorithms
• Excellent English language communication skills (verbal and written)
• A willingness to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Experience in writing scientific papers

Desired Criteria

• PhD from and/or experience working in a top 200 QS or THE ranked University
• At least 2 years of relevant experience as a Post-doctoral researcher in academia or in industry
• High impact first-author publications in top 10% journals in the relevant field
