The newly established medical imaging lab at Khalifa University immediately need a highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow. The successful candidate will conduct research on x-ray imaging science and perform task-based image quality characterization using a clinically established dual-energy CT scanner (located in the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi) and a laboratory version of an emerging photon-counting CT scanner technology. Multi-energy photon-counting CT is an emerging imaging method that provides multiple energy bins in a single CT acquisition. Techniques such as material decomposition in photon-counting CT utilizes the energy dependence of the linear attenuation coefficient to identify and quantify multiple materials in a sample that are indistinguishable from one another in conventional CT.

The candidate will explore material decomposition and material quantification capabilities of photon counting CT systems using phantoms, freshly excised human, and animal specimens and in euthanised or live mice. The postdoctoral fellow will work under the direct supervision of Dr Aamir Raja and collaborate with clinicians and other local and international researchers and graduate students. The postdoc fellow will take responsibility in developing/implementing methods to enhance image quality and reduce artefacts and extend these techniques beyond current limitations.

Key specific tasks required for this position are:

1. Development of machine learning based advanced image processing algorithms

2. Develop specialty equipment, phantoms, and innovative procedures for CT imaging

3. Perform image analysis, process, and interpret data

4. Produce high IF publications and present scientific results at international platforms

5. Grant preparation

Desired skills and experience

Required Qualifications Applicant must have a PhD in physics, applied physics, medical physics, biomedical engineering, radiological sciences, applied mathematics, or other medical imaging related field. Required Experience Applicants with demonstrated expertise in x-ray computed tomography (clinical or preclinical), molecular imaging methods, computer programming (e.g., Matlab, Python), phantom development, small animal handling, and image processing with a strong track record of publications will be contacted. Experience in the machine or deep learning and the ability to develop algorithms/software tools for image analysis will be a plus. The ideal candidate should have the ability to develop and conduct independent research projects with minimal guidance. Khalifa University offers competitive salary and benefits.
