Role Objective

To supervise company project port design process and Support company project Management during the design stage of the Port and other possible marine facilities by providing technical expertise for the best functional and economical outcome of the design without any compromise in quality and stability requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities

Technical:
  • Provide technical expertise supervising the design studies in all stages on behalf of the company.
  • Monitoring all the stages of design studies.
  • In depth review and supervision of all numerical (mathematical) modelling works by using own expertise and experience on this specific matter, ensuring the results obtained are realistic, accurate and acceptable.
  • Supervise the consultant (designer) to come up with the best practical and functional design to fulfil the technical requirements of the project.
  • Supervise the consultant on optimizing the detail designs to cut down unnecessary costs without compromising the safety, functionality, and stability of the marine structures.
  • Attend and supervise the consultant during Physical modelling (laboratory scale modelling) works for the testing and verifying of the designs. This part of the design studies requires specialized knowledge on setting up and conducting physical models, assessing, and evaluating the results obtained. The results are not only numerical, but also based on full time observation of the tests, to assess the performance of the structure and accuracy of the model runs. The results of the physical models can be critical for both value engineering and optimizing the design while further cutting down the costs, and also predicting and avoiding possible failures which may end up with extensive costs to repair.
  • Review and supervise the consultant in preparation of the final detail design reports, drawings, and tender documents, based on all the previous works that has been done.
  • Review tender evaluation reports of the consultant, making sure that the evaluation is fair and correct.
  • Assist the related Project Engineers of the team in technical matters throughout the project duration.
Financial:
  • Review invoices of the Consultant engineer (designer) ensuring the eligibility and the accuracy of the submitted invoices.
  • Handle all possible claims that could be raised by the design consultant.
  • Assist in cost estimates for the construction of the port facilities as well as contributing to value engineering.
  • Assist in cost estimates of additional marine construction works that may come up during the design or construction stage.
People Development:

  • Train young Omani engineers on issues related to design studies, numerical and physical modelling.
  • Coach and guide related personnel in multi-cultural and international environment to build global skills and talent pipeline.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Related Engineering discipline,
  • Master’s or preferably PhD degree in Coastal Engineering
Experience:
  • Minimum 15 years of engineering experience including at least 10 years in design and related works for coastal, harbour and port projects.
Special Skills & Knowledge:

Technical skills
  • Port Infrastructure – port planning, piers, dolphins, bulkheads, heavy lift structures, pipelines, multi and single-buoy moorings, fenders, and ship loading equipment
  • Navigation & Dredging – design of channels and turning basins, analysis of vessel traffic and hazards, dredging, dredged material management
  • Metocean – modelling and data analysis for waves, tides, currents, storm surges, and meteorological conditions
  • Numerical modelling of wave agitation, sediment transport etc.
  • Physical (Laboratory) scale modelling of coastal structures
  • Excellent Project management
  • Knowledge of codes and standards relative to coastal/port engineering
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work well on multi-disciplinary teams (internal and external) under tight deadlines and changing scope
