Job Title: Planning Engineer

Reports To: Project Director / Senior Planning Manager
Job Summary:
The Planning Engineer is responsible for developing, managing, and monitoring project schedules and resources to ensure the successful and timely completion of projects. This role involves critical analysis of project scope, sequencing of activities, and resource allocation to create a realistic baseline plan, which is then used to track progress, identify risks, and support strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Schedule Development:
  • Develop comprehensive project schedules using Critical Path Method (CPM) and other planning techniques in software like Primavera P6 or MS Project.
  • Break down project scope into manageable activities and define their logical sequence and dependencies.
  • Estimate activity durations and resource requirements (manpower, equipment, materials).
  • Progress Monitoring & Control:
  • Track project progress against the baseline schedule and update it regularly.
  • Identify and analyze variances, critical path delays, and potential bottlenecks.
  • Prepare and present detailed progress reports, S-curves, and dashboards to project stakeholders.
  • Resource Management:
  • Develop resource-loaded schedules to forecast manpower and equipment needs.
  • Work with department heads to ensure resources are available as per the project plan.
  • Risk Analysis & Mitigation:
  • Perform schedule risk analysis to identify potential issues that could impact the project timeline.
  • Propose mitigation strategies and recovery plans to keep the project on track.
  • Reporting and Communication:
  • Provide timely and accurate schedule information to the Project Manager and senior management.
  • Participate in project review meetings and advise on scheduling impacts of proposed changes.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Construction Management.
  • 4+ years of experience as a Planning Engineer, preferably in construction, oil & gas, or infrastructure.
  • Expert-level proficiency in project planning software, especially Oracle Primavera P6. MS Project proficiency is also valuable.
  • Strong understanding of project management methodologies, CPM, and Earned Value Management (EVM).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and numerical skills.
  • Advanced skills in MS Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to convey complex schedule information clearly.
