Job Description

  • Performs all managerial functions common to Division level either directly or by delegation to assigned personnel.
  • Provides consultative services through participation in the overall development of Pharmacy Services policies, procedures, and standards in addition to the continued patient care evaluation program as related to drug use and effectiveness.
  • Assures the adherence to approved and accepted ethical and professional practices throughout the service by maintaining the proper storage, preparation and dispensation of all drugs, chemicals and biological and by careful monitoring, either personally or as delegated, and routine inspection and review of related records and documents and monthly reports.
  • Administers field-wide control for the standard procedures as related to storing, handling, recording, dispensing and distribution of all regularly stocked and specially prescribed pharmaceuticals.
  • Secures all health authority import permits for the introduction of all narcotic, controlled and psychotropic drugs into the hospital\xe2\x80\x99s use.
  • Submits annual narcotic requirement forecast based on estimated usage. Reports on a quarterly basis, inventory and usage of all narcotic, controlled and psychotropic drugs to the Health Authority and all other related correspondence is dealt with, through the appropriate channels, as required.
  • Perpetual inventory count & Manage the pharmacy inventory as per Hospital policy
  • Directs the design and preparation of the publication of Drug Formulary of all available and approved drugs every two years as a reference for all medical personnel.
  • Reviews pharmaceutical journals, publications and pharmacy newsletters for the identification of newly marketed drugs.
  • Reviews all pharmaceutical manufacturers\xe2\x80\x99 catalogs and brochures and various professional reference books and articles for use by all medical personnel.
  • Participates in the T.Q.M. programs in collaboration with T.Q. M. Department.
  • Serves as member of the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee, Drug Utilization Review Committee, and other hospital-wide committees attending to its regular meeting and appropriately taking actions to Pharmacy-related issues on a timely manner.
  • Advises on matters pertaining to criteria of treatment, cost, and correct usage of drugs in the administration of patient care, etc.
  • Assesses, evaluates, and follow ups pharmacy staffs who are candidates for licensing to submit licensing requirements and be qualified for the licensure examination.
  • Acts and makes immediate decisions upon receipt of any circular/letter issued by the Ministry of Health (MOH) recommending withdrawal and/or discontinuation of any medication, or to report any unexpected adverse effects.
  • Assures, either personally or as delegated, that all employees receive mandatory fire safety, infection control and/or other in-house educational training, in accordance with regulations.
  • Responsible for the written policies and procedures, overall maintenance of adequate supplies and in-house preparations, proper control and expeditious dispensing of pharmaceutical items.
  • Determines Pharmacy Services drug distribution systems from the store to Pharmacy, nursing stations, and other clinical area stores.
  • Ensures proper dispensing to eligible SGH and other insurance employees\xe2\x80\x99 appropriate prescriptions per SGH policies and contract agreement.
  • Establishes close liaison with Ministry of Heath for complying with its governing rules and regulations regarding the use and control of all drugs.
  • Reports to and receives administrative advisory from the Group Director of Pharmaceutical Services; Chief of Medical Operations with regards to medical problems; and to the Chief Operating Officer with respect to administrative issues.
  • Participates in the development of Pharmacy Services policies, procedures, and standards in addition to the continued patient care evaluation programs related to drug use and effectiveness.
  • Adheres to approved and accepted ethical and professional practices throughout the service.
  • Maintains proper storage, preparation and dispensing of all drugs and chemicals that are biological hazards by careful monitoring, either personally or by delegation to conduct routine inspection of these items including proper and professional administration of such drugs and contaminants.
  • Secures Ministry of Health (MOH) import permits for the introduction of all narcotic, controlled and psychotropic drugs into the hospital.
  • Forecasts and submits annual narcotic requirement based on actual and estimated usages.
  • Reports on a quarterly basis, inventory and consumption of all narcotics, controlled, and psychotropic drugs to the Ministry of Health (MOH)
  • Reviews all pharmaceutical manufacturers\xe2\x80\x99 catalogs and brochures and various professional reference books and articles including preparation of Drug Formulary publication of all available and approved drugs for reference by doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers.
  • Deals only with agents/vendors complying with storage and sanitation standards as approved by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Agency.
  • May chair the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee with responsibilities to prepare agenda; presides the meetings, and make follow through on the implementations of the decisions made.
  • Assesses pharmacy candidates at the time of interview and recommends them for hire to Pharmacy Department.
  • Decides upon receipt of any circular/letter issued by the Ministry of Health recommending withdrawal, discontinuation of any medication, and to report unexpected adverse effects.
  • Responsible for approving purchases of pharmaceutical items in collaboration with Materials Management and Bait Al Batterjee Medical Services.
  • Monitors pharmaceutical re-ordering levels, prices, and expiry dates of stocks in shelves and items on order.
  • Delegates duties and responsibilities to the staff in the department utilizing their time effectively and allocating responsibilities accordingly.
  • Collaborates with other depts. mostly nursing to settle work-related issues regarding Pharmacy.
  • Attends to the Steering Committee Meeting and any other meetings as required and communicates to the staff in the department any related decisions made for implementation.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the higher manager to effect efficient service.
