in the full painting lifecycle specifically focusing on sanding, putty application, and surface smoothing. You will be responsible for preparing metal and wall surfaces to ensure high-quality finishes that meet precise visual standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Surface Preparation & Sanding
Follow instructions from the Lead Painter to understand surface requirements.
Execute precise surface cleaning, removing rust, grease, old paint, and dirt from metal or wall surfaces.
Perform manual and mechanical sanding using sandpaper, blocks, and orbital sanders.
Mask and tape off areas that should not be painted to ensure clean lines.
2. Putty Application & Repair
Mix and apply putty or filler to repair dents, cracks, holes, and uneven surfaces.
Perform detailed putty sanding after drying to create a perfectly smooth and seamless base.
Inspect surfaces visually and by touch to ensure they are free of waves or imperfections before painting.
3. Finishing Support & Maintenance
Assist in the application of primers and base coats using brushes or rollers.
Clean and maintain painting tools, including spray guns, brushes, and mixing containers.
Assist in the movement and setup of scaffolding, ladders, and painting materials on-site.
4. Safety & Maintenance
Maintain a clean and organized workspace, ensuring dust and debris are removed.
Conduct regular checks on sanding machines and safety gear.
Strictly adhere to PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) guidelines, specifically wearing masks/respirators for dust and fumes.
Requirements & Qualifications
Essential Skills:
Experience:
Minimum of 2+ years of proven experience as a Painter Helper or Assistant.
Material Expertise:
Strong knowledge of different grades of sandpaper, types of putty (body filler/wall putty), and primers.
Technical Proficiency:
Skilled in manual sanding, using power sanders, and mixing two-part fillers/putty.
Finishing:
Expert ability in detecting surface imperfections and achieving a glass-smooth finish via sanding.
Teamwork:
Ability to follow technical instructions and support the main painting team efficiently.
Certifications:
Preferred:
Training in chemical handling or workplace safety (though experience is the primary focus).
Physical Requirements:
Ability to perform repetitive motion (sanding) and stand/bend for extended periods.
Manual dexterity and excellent attention to detail.
Tolerance for working in dusty environments (while wearing PPE).
