Job Description

Job Summary:
The Nursing Shift Manager is a leadership role responsible for overseeing nursing staff and ensuring high-quality patient care during an assigned shift (day, evening, or night). This position requires strong clinical expertise, decision-making skills, and the ability to manage staffing, patient flow, and emergencies while maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Clinical & Patient Care Oversight:

• Ensure all nursing staff deliver safe, effective, and compassionate patient care.
• Monitor patient conditions and intervene in complex medical situations.
• Assist with direct patient care when necessary.
• Ensure proper documentation and adherence to care plans.

2. Staff Supervision & Leadership:

• Assign duties to nurses, CNAs, and support staff based on patient needs and acuity.
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to nursing staff.
• Conduct shift briefings and debriefings to ensure smooth transitions.
• Address staff performance issues and escalate concerns to upper management.

3. Operational & Administrative Duties:

• Ensure compliance with hospital policies, Joint Commission standards, and state/federal regulations.
• Manage staffing shortages by arranging coverage or redistributing workload.
• Monitor inventory of medical supplies and medications.
• Collaborate with physicians, case managers, and other healthcare professionals.

4. Emergency & Conflict Resolution:

• Respond to medical emergencies and code situations.
• Resolve patient/family complaints and staff conflicts professionally.
• Report critical incidents and near misses to appropriate leadership.
