Please note the description for Design Engineer role. JOB PURPOSE: The Design Engineer is responsible for creating, developing, and improving designs for products, systems, or structures based on client requirements, industry standards, and project specifications. They work closely with project teams to ensure that designs are functional, cost-effective, and compliant with safety regulations and quality standards. The role involves using CAD software and engineering tools to produce detailed design plans, conducting feasibility studies, and making technical adjustments as needed throughout the design and implementation process. The Design Engineer also collaborates with manufacturing, construction, and other engineering teams to ensure successful project execution. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Develop detailed design concepts, plans, and drawings for MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing)
systems based on project specifications, industry standards, and client requirements.
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other teams to ensure the MEP designs align with
project timelines, budgets, and technical specifications.
Utilize CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software and other engineering tools to create accurate and
detailed drawings, models, and schematics for MEP systems.
Conduct feasibility studies and technical analysis to assess the viability of MEP designs and propose
adjustments as necessary.
Ensure that all designs comply with relevant local codes, regulations, and industry standards, and are
aligned with safety and sustainability requirements.
Coordinate with external consultants, contractors, and suppliers to ensure that design requirements
are met throughout the project lifecycle.
Review and approve shop drawings, submittals, and product specifications from contractors and
vendors to ensure compliance with design standards.
Address any design-related challenges or issues that arise during the construction phase, providing
technical support and guidance to project teams.
Perform design calculations, simulations, and analysis to optimize system performance and ensure
the efficiency of MEP systems.
Ensure proper documentation of design changes, approvals, and project milestones to maintain an
organized and traceable design record.
Collaborate with procurement teams to select suitable materials, equipment, and components that
align with design requirements and project budgets.
Monitor design implementation during construction, ensuring that designs are accurately followed and
that changes or adjustments are documented appropriately.
Conduct site inspections and attend project meetings to provide technical insights and resolve any
design-related issues during the execution phase.
COMMUNICATION & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: Internal Communication
Project Managers: Collaborate to understand project requirements, timelines, and budgets, ensuring designs align with project goals.
Other Engineers (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing): Work closely with other engineering teams to ensure integration and coordination of MEP systems.
Procurement Team: Coordinate with procurement for material specifications, sourcing, and cost estimation related to MEP systems.
Construction Team: Liaise with construction teams to address design queries, resolve on-site issues, and ensure designs are implemented correctly.
Quality Assurance Teams: Ensure that designs comply with quality standards and regulations, collaborating on quality control measures.
Senior Management: Report on project progress, design milestones, and any issues affecting design timelines or project outcomes.
External Communication
Clients and Stakeholders: Communicate to understand client needs, gather feedback, and ensure design expectations are met throughout the project lifecycle.
Consultants and Contractors: Collaborate with external consultants and contractors to review designs, adjust project specifications, and address any challenges during construction.
Suppliers and Vendors: Work with suppliers to source materials, equipment, and systems, ensuring the specifications align with design requirements.
Regulatory Authorities: Coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure compliance with building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards.
External Design Teams: Communicate with external design professionals (e.g., architects) to ensure integrated and cohesive system designs that meet overall project goals.
FRAMEWORKS, BOUNDARIES & DECISION-MAKING AUTHORITY: The Design Engineer MEP operates within the framework of company standards, industry regulations, and project specifications to develop and refine MEP system designs. They have decision-making authority related to design solutions, system optimization, and material selection, ensuring designs are cost[1]effective, functional, and compliant with all required standards. Major decisions, such as significant design changes, budget approvals, or deviations from the initial design, typically require approval from senior engineers or project managers. The role also involves adhering to legal and safety boundaries, ensuring designs meet environmental and regulatory requirements. QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE: MINIMUM QUALIFICATION: Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering, or a related field is required. A master's degree or further specialization in MEP systems is an advantage. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 3-5 years of experience in MEP design, preferably in the construction, engineering, or building services sector.
