The College of Architecture, Art and Design (CAAD) at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) invites applications for full-time continuing positions in CAAD Labs.

CAAD Labs promotes the act of making as an essential component of a comprehensive design education. It provides support and resources for student and faculty production of full-scale design output, in pursuit of academic excellence, scholarly activities, and cross-disciplinary practice.

CAAD Labs consists of three primary lab groups - Material Labs (woodworking, metal working, pottery, casting), Fabrication Labs (laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC cutting, industrial robotics), and Media Labs (audio/video production, photography, printmaking, and physical computing). CAAD Labs Specialist is a full-time, salaried position reporting to the Director of CAAD Labs. The Labs Specialist is responsible for instructional, technical, and operational support for one of CAAD Labs\' groups (Material Labs, Fabrication Labs, and Multimedia Labs). The CAAD Material Fabrication Labs encompass laboratories with a wide range of conventional fabrication equipment; including a Woodshop, Metalshop, Ceramics Studio, Casting Areas, and a Finishing Lab.

In this position, CAAD Labs\' Material Fabrication Labs Specialist is responsible for the development and management of the Woodshop, Metalshop, and Ceramics Studio primarily.

Job Responsibilities

• Provide orientations, workshops, and training sessions on lab processes and use.
• Manage lab equipment and consumables inventory and assist in making orders for new supplies.
• Perform routine equipment maintenance, inspection, and repair to ensure smooth operation.
• Provide individual instruction during regular lab operating hours.
• Provide course support functions as requested by CAAD Academic Departments.
• Demonstrate proper equipment operation.
• Ensure that labs meet and maintain requisite safety standards.
• Provide access and support to labs during operating hour.
• Provide instruction to students using the Material Fabrication labs.
• Coordinate with CAAD lab student assistants\' schedules and training.
• Assist in sale of lab materials and services, and tracking material consumption.
• Coordinate the Lab\'s online reservation system, and student network folders.
• Provide course support functions as requested by CAAD Academic Departments.

Qualifications and Skills Required

• Bachelor\'s degree from a recognized institution in Architecture, Design, or experience in the areas of woodworking, metalworking, and ceramics.
• Functional competency and knowledge in the areas of woodworking and metalworking.
• Functional competency in Ceramics is desirable but not required.
• Strong English communication and writing skills.
• Proactivity and willingness to develop and acquire new skills.
• Preferred working knowledge of traditional fabrication equipment.
• Working knowledge in design software applications.
• Able and willing to work extra and/or flexible hours at peak times during the semester.
