Job Description

The School Librarian plans, develops and administers the school library program and its associated policies and services. He/she provides library assistance to students and staff and acts as their consultant on the optimal way of utilizing the libraries services, materials and resources.

1. Develops, in collaboration with the Principal a plan for the library services and operations including a curriculum-targeted instructional program
2. Assumes leadership in promoting library and media resources use by students and staff
3. Administers the annual budget of the library, manages the requisitions for
library resources and equipment, and maintains an accurate record of expenses
4. Provides statistical information on library resources and utilization as requested by the Principal
5. Establishes an attractive and interesting library atmosphere and maintains
quietness on the premises
6. Organizes library space, furniture, equipment and resources in an effective
and inviting setting that is conducive to learning
7. Manages the use of technology in the library according to firm utilization rules and in support of the instructional program
8. Ensures the cleanliness and hygiene of the area and furniture for student use
maintaining a “no food or drink” premises
9. Maintains professionalism both in appearance and behavior
10. Coordinates the arrangement for book fairs organized by the school
Curriculum and Instructional Support
1. Coordinates the receipt, registration and utilization of curriculum support
material (Teacher’s editions of books, CDs, etc.) to be used by academic staff
2. Organizes a schedule for class visits and assists teachers in implementing instructional activities and managing students conduct
3. Receives periodicals and magazines from academic staff and coordinates the
process of putting them in circulation
4. Manages the student book exchange program
5. Monitors students during their presence in the library and ensures that library instructions are being applied
6. Facilitates student learning activities and helps them in their research work
(use of encyclopedias, dictionaries, references etc.) using strategies that meet the needs, interests, and abilities of individual students as well as groups of students
7. Guides students in selection of resources and counsels teachers about new and existing resources
Selection and Resources Acquisition
1. Prepares annual budget requirements for library resourcing
2. Coordinates the process of selection and decommissioning of resource materials according to AMSI and school guidelines
3. Visits book fairs and publishing companies, meets with salespeople and
publisher representatives who visit the school, and recommend and report to the Principal on resource acquisition
4. Coordinates the circulation of acquired resources for effective use in the instructional program
5. Reviews professional journals, publishers' catalogs, etc. and consults with
teachers and other staff about requisition needs
6. Receives gift books and other resources from publishers, staff, and students,
evaluates their appropriateness and arranges to put them into circulation
Organization and Maintenance of Resources
1. Ensures that the library collection is well maintained and in good repair
2. Conducts regular inventory checks and repairs damaged books and other
material as feasible
3. Registers, classifies, catalogs and organizes the resource materials in the most efficient and effective manner and according to professional guidelines
4. Prepares and maintains accurate bibliographies and lists of resources
5. Stacks and shelves books and other resources appropriately
6. Prepares lists of damaged, lost and renovated books and ensures that all
related school policies are implemented properly
Professional Development
1. Provides library tours and training for newly inducted staff
2. Stays up-to-date with new developments in his/her profession through
readings, conferences, and other means of training and knowledge acquisition and transfers this knowledge to members of the staff on a regular basis

  • Professional qualification in librarianship, information science, or information management from an accredited institution

  • 3 years of experience in a similar position

  • Demonstrated outstanding interpersonal and communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students of all ages

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive work relationships with members of the staff

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Advanced computer skills supporting this type of work, including and not limited to word processing tools, spreadsheets, and presentation tools

  • Highly developed organizational and planning skills, including managing time, competing priorities and resources in a structured way

  • Demonstrated ability to set and manage clear and demanding performance expectations for individuals and teams
