Lead Translations Officer

Job Description

As a Lead Translations Officer is responsible to translate documents from English to Arabic and vice-versa, often on very short deadline. Document types range from press releases for the Corporate Communications Department to correspondence plus proof-reading for a broad range of materials. Responsibilities:
  • Translate press releases from English to Arabic, often on a short deadline.
  • Translate key documents such as letters from English to Arabic or Arabic to English for the Corp Communications department and management.
  • Review Arabic newspapers and translate, where necessary, key stories for management.
  • Check social media for Arabic comment, positive and negative on Qatar Airways.
  • Check Arabic radio / TV broadcast stations for any stories positive and negative on Qatar Airways.
  • Monitors day to day Arabic media monitoring.
  • Besides the Marketing and Corporate Communications Departments, may also have to assist other departments and subsidiaries in providing them with translations and reviewing their Arabic texts, as determined by the Arabic PR Manager or Corporate Communications Leadership.
  • Being part of the Corporate Communications team, may also assist in sending out press releases through the company’s IT platforms, handling media relations, particularly with the Arabic media, in handling their calls, requests and inquiries.
  • In the event of an accident or incident, would be required to work after-hours and weekends for the purposes of crisis communications response.
  • In addition to translation, the Lead translation officer may be required to monitor global media coverage of Qatar Airways on the internet, newspapers and magazines.
  • Manage the company’s media email account (QR Media) as well as handling the archiving of press releases and media clippings on the local server.
  • Checking QR.com Arabic site regularly to ensure language and text are in line with company standards.
  • Ensuring all Arabic press collateral is kept up to date and amend where necessary.
  • Staging Arabic and English press releases.
  • Updating travel alerts.
  • Perform other department duties related to his/her position as directed by the Head of the Department.

Qualifications Qualifications and Experience:
  • An ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent with Minimum 4 years of job-related experience
  • Experience in translating to level documents for management and public dissemination.
  • Background in Journalism.
Preferred : Bachelors Degree in Translation. Job Specific Skills: Essential
  • Fluent in Arabic.
  • Ability to interpret between the two languages quickly. News judgement
  • Ability to highlight issues arising in Arabic media that could potentially escalate.
  • Manage tasks within timeframes.
  • Ability to prioritise workload.
  • Ability to fill the role of Editorial Writer within the crisis communications team.
  • Multi-tasking.
  • Managerial skills – ability to delegate work, set clear direction and manage workflow. Strong mentoring and coaching skills. Ability to train and develop subordinate’s skills. Ability to foster teamwork among team members. Ability to work under pressure.
  • Fully knowledgeable about the company as the role involves liaising with key media stakeholders.
