The Department of Cognitive Sciences, United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), is seeking a laboratory specialist to work in its Linguistics Laboratory. Reporting to the Chair of the Department, the position holder is responsible for overseeing and managing the laboratory equipment. Duties will include stimuli construction, database analyses, phonetic transcriptions, reading and writing summaries of scientific articles, programming experiments, preparing auditory stimuli, preparing consent forms and questionnaires, testing human participants, and conducting statistical analyses, and accompanying student volunteers to testing sites in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. Other tasks may involve preparing reports on results, documenting and archiving of the data obtained. The ideal candidate will hold a specialization in linguistics, psychology or cognitive science, with specific experience using the eye-tracking, EEG, and ultrasound procedures since s/he will be responsible for independently setting up and calibrating instrumentation, monitoring data acquisition, saving and processing data for offline analysis, and obtaining informed consent from human subjects. The successful candidate will be expected to start work at UAEU in April 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Minimum Qualification

An undergraduate degree in Linguistics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Computer Science or a related field from a reputable university.

Preferred Qualification

Knowledge and experience in some of the following: 1. EYE LINK Experiment Builder, BrainVision Recorder, BrainVision Analyzer and ultrasound procedures is desired 2. PsychoPy, SPSS, R, MATLAB, Python, BASH). 3. Experimental design 4. Ultrasound procedures.

Expected Skills

The ideal candidate will have well developed critical thinking skills, be able to work well independently and as part of a team, be able to meet deadlines and work under pressure. S/he must have excellent English reading and writing skills. Competence in Arabic will be an added advantage.
