Laboratory Manager Materials & Geotechnical Testing

Job Description
The Laboratory Manager oversees day-to-day operations of the geotechnical and construction materials testing lab. This includes scheduling and supervising testing of soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and other materials in compliance with ASTM, AASHTO, and DOT standards. The manager ensures test accuracy, staff competency, and regulatory compliance while supporting internal and external project teams.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and train laboratory technicians and support staff. Manage testing operations for soil classification, compaction, shear strength, permeability, concrete compressive strength, aggregate gradation, asphalt properties, etc. Ensure all laboratory procedures are performed in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and project-specific standards. Oversee quality assurance/control processes, calibration of equipment, and maintenance schedules. Maintain laboratory accreditation (e.g., AASHTO R18, CCRL, AMRL, local DOT requirements). Review and certify lab test reports before distribution to clients and engineering staff. Implement and improve laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs). Ensure compliance with workplace safety standards (OSHA, internal policies). Maintain laboratory inventory and supply procurement. Support business development by interfacing with clients and responding to project needs. Collaborate with geotechnical engineers, field staff, and project managers.
