The Lab Technician assists and supports science teachers in the implementation of the science curriculum and its related instructional activities. He/she provides technical support and ensures a safe environment under which science experiments can be conducted.
The Lab Technician works under the direct supervision of the Science Coordinator. He/she assists science teachers through a range of activities including readying lab equipment and materials ahead of science classes and conducting science experiment to support science classes. He/she employs safe practices in the lab by applying the Occupational Health and Safety rules and regulations. He/she also ensures the safe storage and disposal of both hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals and biological deposits, cleaning, sanitizing and safely storing lab equipment and materials, and sanitizing lab premises..
Job Responsibilities
Instructional Support
1. Collaborates with science teachers on scientific experiments
2. Advises science teachers on the technical requirements of the curriculum
3. Communicates with science teachers on the preparations required ahead of their class
4. Conducts lab experiments in front of science teachers and students
5. Collects and preserves live samples to support life science lessons
6. Provides guidance to teachers and students on the proper use of lab
equipment
7. Uses science related ICT tools in demonstrations and lab sessions
8. Acts as a consultant to science teachers on safety procedures in lab usage
9. Supervises students in the lab and ensures that all student adhere to lab instructions
10. Ensures the integration of safety and health practices (e.g. wearing safety goggles and lab gowns during science experiments) during lab sessions
Preparation, Maintenance and Care
1. Ensures that adequate notice is given by teachers in order to prepare lab materials and equipment (chemical solutions, projector, etc.)
2. Maintains an inventory of lab equipment
3. Logs orders for lab materials and equipment in consultation with the Science
Coordinator
4. Checks science lab equipment regularly to ensure that they are working
properly
5. Establishes and maintains a safe system for labeling, storing, handling and
disposing of chemical and biological materials according to proper guidelines
6. Maintains an updated and easily accessible Material Safety Data Sheet
(MSDS)
7. Maintains an accurate and updated record of consumables and ensures replenishing regularly
8. Maintains an accurate inventory record of equipment and confirms and logs the safe receipt of new ones
9. Reports any damage to lab equipment and arranges for damage repairs
10. Ensures that all lab equipment are clean and safe to use
11. Orders current catalogues and price lists from laboratory supplies companies
12. Prepares budget requirements for the acquisition of new supplies and equipment
13. Maintains a clean and well organized experiment preparation location
14. Conducts regular safety audits and inspections
15. Treats chemical spills with extreme caution and cleans them up using proper
