Instrumentation Project Engineer (5-7 Years Experience)

Oil & Gas Industry - Typical Roles & Responsibilities

Core Technical Responsibilities

Instrument Design and Specification Prepare and review instrument datasheets and specifications for field instruments (pressure, level, flow, temperature). Ensure compliance with relevant standards (ISA, IEC, API, Shell DEPs, etc.). Control and Safety System Integration Configure and support DCS, PLC, SCADA, ESD, and F&G systems. Develop loop diagrams, logic diagrams, and cause-and-effect matrices. Cable Engineering and Layouts Supervise the preparation of instrument layout drawings, cable routing, JB schedules, and hook-up drawings. Coordinate with other disciplines for instrument cable tray layouts and interface requirements. Field Support and Commissioning Conduct loop checks, functional testing, and calibration of instruments. Support pre-commissioning and commissioning activities in coordination with QA/QC and operations.

Package Instrumentation & Vendor Coordination

Package Unit Instrumentation Review and verify instrumentation design within vendor-packaged equipment (compressors, pumps, heaters, etc.). Ensure proper interface of package instruments with plant-wide control and safety systems. Vendor Document Review & FATs Perform detailed technical review of vendor documents and participate in Factory Acceptance Tests. Ensure vendor compliance with project instrumentation specifications and control philosophies.

Analytical Instruments & Sampling Systems

Process Analyzer Systems Specify and review analyzers such as gas chromatographs, H2S, O?, moisture, and CO? analyzers. Plan analyzer shelters, utility connections (carrier/calibration gases), and local HMI interfaces. Sampling System Design Design and validate manual and automated sampling systems to ensure representative samples. Ensure proper integration with laboratory and process requirements per API and ISO standards. Analyzer Shelter & Integration Coordinate HVAC, power, purge, and safety systems within analyzer shelters. Lead installation and commissioning of complex analyzer systems with vendor support.

Project Engineering & Coordination

Project Planning & Deliverables Develop instrument deliverables (index, I/O list, datasheets) aligned with the project schedule. Track progress and ensure timely submission of engineering and vendor documents. Interdisciplinary Coordination Interface with process, electrical, mechanical, and civil teams to align instrumentation scope. Procurement and Cost Control Prepare instrument MTOs and assist procurement with technical evaluations and purchase specs. Monitor budget, material lead times, and vendor performance. Compliance & Safety Ensure all instrumentation activities meet HSE standards and participate in HAZOP, SIL, and risk assessments.
