Basic Function

This is an intermediate position that requires a lot of physical activity, such as walking, lifting, and bending. The employee performs an expanding range of professional industrial hygiene assignments to better develop experience in recognizing and understanding the occurrence (real or potential) of chemical, physical, and biological agents, and other stresses, including their interactions that may affect the health and well-being of workers, patients, visitors and the environment. And while the employee is expected to work independently, he or she will, from time to time, work under more experienced IHs.

Scope

The work is in all Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare facilities in Dhahran and the districts; however, work may occasionally be extended to Medical Designated Facilities (MDFs) and governmental organizations. Therefore, periodic travel is required. The Industrial Hygienist will work in an intermediate level position under the supervision of the IH team to facilitate in conducting various surveys and activities. Work hours are assigned to meet operational needs of the assigned areas. However, some work activities must be performed over weekends and after normal working hours, so overtime may be required. Direction is through the senior IH staff and the Unit supervisor.

Principal Contacts

Daily with medical ward supervisors and staff, and facility personnel. Occasional public and community contact when assisting the IH team with work at MDFs and governmental organizations.

Principal Duties

Performing comprehensive/baseline industrial hygiene surveys to identify, evaluate, and control workplace health hazards that may adversely affect workers' health periodically and as needed in all identified hazardous locations per the Occupational Health Hazard Assessment (OHHA) program. Assist with the testing and certifying of ventilation engineering controls such as biological safety cabinets (BSCs) and fume hoods located in hazardous locations such as laboratories, and laminar flow clean benches located in sensitive areas such as pharmacy admixture rooms. Evaluating HVAC systems that service critical areas such as Central Supply Services (CSS) decontamination rooms and airborne infection isolation (A.I.I.) rooms. This includes, but is not limited to, determining air changes per hour, air pressure status, and filtration efficiency, especially those systems equipped with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration systems. Evaluating workers' exposure to chemicals such as formaldehyde gas, xylene, nitrous oxide, and methyl methacrylate. This may include air sampling to ensure that workers are not overexposed. Ensuring all components of the Hazard Communication Program are being met. Performing design reviews from an industrial hygiene standpoint for projects associated with building construction and renovations, and engineering controls, especially ventilation systems/equipment necessary to control chemicals, bioaerosols and other airborne contaminants. Monitoring, in coordination with Infection Control and Medical Facilities Management Unit, construction activities for compliance with infection control measures. Reporting all evaluations regarding employee over exposures to hazardous materials/waste to the head of the Occupational Health Unit. Upon request, investigate indoor air quality complaints and provide the proponent with results including findings and recommendations for corrective measures. Monitoring and assessing eyewash stations and shower facilities during Environment of Care inspection rounds and when performing industrial hygiene surveys. Fit testing and training all respirator users, including N95 respirator users, on the use, wear and care of respiratory devices in accordance with the Respiratory Protection policy. Monitoring and assessing mold contamination, including performing media sampling if needed, and investigating for potential causes and make recommendations for remediation and appropriate action.

Education

A Bachelor Degree in Industrial Hygiene or similar field, such as Environmental and Occupational Safety or Occupational Hygiene from an accredited institute.

Experience

Minimum 5 years of directly related experience, preferably in a healthcare setting, is required.

Certifications/Other requirements as applicable

Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications. Ability to speak and write reports in English using both scientifically correct terminology and terms understandable to any level of listener or reader. Desirable to speak and write Arabic. If male, must possess a valid driving license.
