An HSE Manager needs a

bachelor's degree

(often in Engineering, Science, or Safety), significant

hands-on experience

, and key professional certifications like

NEBOSH Diploma/IGC, IOSH, or CSP

for technical skills, plus strong leadership, communication, risk assessment, and problem-solving abilities to manage workplace health, safety, and environmental compliance. Educational & Experience Requirements

Degree:

Bachelor's in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Chemistry, or related science.

Experience:

Several years (10-15+) in safety roles, progressing from officer to manager.

Skills:

Risk assessment, auditing, incident investigation, regulatory knowledge, data analysis, MS Office proficiency, strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving.
Key Certifications (Technical)

NEBOSH:

NEBOSH Diploma (gold standard), International General Certificate (IGC).

IOSH:

Membership (GradIOSH/CMIOSH) and courses.

CSP:

Certified Safety Professional (often US-based).

Specialized:

NEBOSH Certificates in Process Safety, Environmental Management, or Safety Leadership.
Essential Soft Skills

Leadership:

Inspiring a safety culture and gaining buy-in.

Communication:

Clearly conveying complex regulations to all levels.

Interpersonal:

Collaboration, conflict resolution, assertiveness.
