Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Overview: Also known as a Heavy-Duty Mechanic, this professional specializes in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining large machinery used in construction, mining, agriculture, and other industries (e.g., bulldozers, excavators, graders, loaders).
Key Responsibilities:
- Diagnostics: Use computerized diagnostic tools and manual techniques to identify mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical problems.
- Repair & Overhaul: Perform repairs and full overhauls on engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, braking systems, and undercarriages.
- Preventive Maintenance: Conduct scheduled maintenance services, including oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication.
- Component Rebuilding: Rebuild and replace worn or defective components.
- Testing: Test repaired equipment to ensure it meets performance and safety standards.
- Documentation: Accurately record work performed, parts used, and time spent on service orders.
- Completion of a formal apprenticeship or technical college program in Heavy Duty Equipment Technology.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and proficiency with complex tools.
- In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and powertrains.
- Physical strength and stamina to handle heavy parts and work in demanding conditions.
