The Heavy Crane Operator is responsible for operating mobile and/or crawler cranes for lifting and positioning heavy components within an onshore shipyard environment. This includes the movement of ship sections, engines, blocks, materials, and equipment. Operators must handle loads up to
250 tons
, with full adherence to safety standards, lift plans, and coordination with rigging crews.
Key Responsibilities:
Safely operate heavy-duty cranes (e.g., hydraulic, crawler, rough terrain) to lift and move ship parts, machinery, and structural blocks--typically ranging from
20 tons up to 250 tons
.
Conduct
pre-operation checks
, including brake function, controls, hoist ropes, and load indicators.
Interpret and execute lift plans and load charts specific to shipyard lifting operations.
Set up cranes and rigging configurations based on
weight, radius, and ground conditions
, ensuring stability and load control.
Coordinate with riggers, signalmen, and supervisors to perform synchronized or tandem lifts as needed.
Ensure crane outriggers, mats, and lifting accessories are properly placed and certified for load capacity.
Report any mechanical faults or safety concerns immediately to the maintenance team or supervisor.
Maintain daily crane logbooks and records of lifts and inspections.
Comply with shipyard safety protocols, including use of PPE, area barricading, and load test certifications.
Support lifting of non-standard or complex items using
special lifting gear or frames
designed for marine components.
Requirements:
Valid
Heavy Equipment / Crane Operator license
(local or international, e.g., UAE MOL, OSHA, or equivalent).
Minimum
3-5 years of experience
operating cranes in a
marine, shipyard, or industrial environment
.
Experience handling
heavy lifts over 100 tons
, including tandem lifts.
Strong knowledge of
rigging principles
,
crane safety standards
, and
load handling procedures
.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, lift plans, and communicate effectively with rigging teams.
Familiarity with standard shipyard equipment such as
Goliath cranes, mobile cranes, and lifting beams

Physically fit and able to work in outdoor conditions with exposure to heat, dust, and noise.
