Job Purpose

BALSAM or Barnamij L-Ta'leem Sehat al-Mujtama (?????? ?????? ??? ??????? - ??????) is a community-based, household-focused, longitudinal service-learning program that incorporates attention to the social determinants of health (SDH) through its education, service, and research missions. BALSAM integrates social sciences, clinical experience, interprofessional teamwork, systems-based practice and attention to the SDH to nurture socially accountable and culturally sensitive physicians. BALSAM accomplishes this mission by partnering with a network of community agencies to improve the health of households and communities. This experience promotes students' professional development and their acquisition of competencies that form the CMHS MD program.

Reporting to the Community Health Program Manager, the Health Educator is key in advancing the health and SDH education of the program and has three main areas of responsibility:

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Operational Responsibilities

Administrative
  • Support the continuity of the relationship with BALSAM's partners
  • Coordinate and plan activities related to health and SDH education
  • Identify essential resources for the program
  • Facilitate classes/ activities/ workshops/ webinars according to the organization's guidelines
  • Document information related to participants and patients
  • Collect data necessary for monitoring and evaluation of the program and interventions
Academic Service
  • Foster service within the community at large
  • Design and implement training or capacity building to other health team members and community participants
Healthcare Service
  • Participate in the development and delivery of educational services provided by the BALSAM Program.
  • Advocate for community health programs based on the community needs
Education: education will be provided to three groups: medical students, BALSAM partners and patients/ participants. As such, the health educator will
  • Enhance the program and contribute to the development of the BALSAM's health and SDH education curriculum
  • Align health education outcomes with the Medicine and Society course's learning outcomes
  • Participate in the conceptualization, development and delivery of educational content and training material necessary to prepare medical students for their roles and responsibilities in the program
  • Participate in the conceptualization, development and delivery of educational content and training material to build the capacity of BALSAM's partners on health and SHD education topics
  • Design and implement programs specifically designed to address the community needs in a culturally appropriate manner
  • Develop material (print/digital, webinars, workshops) for and support cascade training of BALSAM's trainees be it students, partners or patients/ participants
  • Provide health and wellness education effectively to target audiences using innovative techniques
  • Assist in the selection of learning resources for program participants
  • Develop material to support the online version of the course on Black Board
Research
  • Advance the health and SDH research agenda of BALSAM
  • Participate in the conception, planning, implementation and publication of the program's research
  • Participate in research related to program evaluation and quality improvement
Others
  • Adhere to the University's information security and confidentiality policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly.
  • Coordinate with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when needed
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provide coaching, guidance and mentoring as required to enhance the capacity of the students, partners and participants and ensure the achievement of BALSAM's outcomes
  • Supervise the students' planning and delivery of education material
  • Support the cascade training of trainees be it BALSAM's students, partners or patients/ participants
Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications
  • Graduate degree in Health education (Masters or PhD) or education and training in healthcare with relevant required experience
Required Experience
  • Five (5) or more years of healthcare experience with experience in training development and delivery
  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary and collegial team, with well-developed professional and interpersonal skills.
  • Three (3) or more years of healthcare experience with experience in training development and delivery
  • Demonstrable ability to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary and collegial team, with well-developed professional and interpersonal skills.
