Job Overview: Position Head of Department Degree Bachelor's degree or a Masters/Bachelor's in a relevant subject alongside a BEd/ PGCE / PGDE or equivalent. Experience At least 3 to 4 years as a Subject Coordinator Key Skills . Excellent organizational skills with the ability to see the 'Big Picture'. . Exceptional communication skills both written and verbal, strong interpersonal skills, and experience in maintaining cooperative partnerships within the school. . Skilled in negotiating conflicting interests to ensure a positive outcome. . Be a team player with experience working within a team and independently. . Be mature, calm, and reflective when making decisions . Sharp critical thinking and problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines. . Advanced computer literacy and extensive experience with Microsoft Office products. Reports to Head of Section Role purpose: Head of the Department is responsible for the leadership and administration of the department in alignment with the vision and strategic plan of the school. HOD leads a team of teachers to contribute to the education and well-being of students. In their leadership, HOD models both deep knowledge of the subject and excellent teaching practice. S/he will facilitate professional learning opportunities and discussions with the teachers in the department and enable them to be the best they can be. HOD is responsible for participating in the leadership, development and promotion of the ethos and character of MSB institute. Duties and responsibilities: Leading, developing and maintaining the ethos and character of the school . Demonstrate an understanding of and value for MSB's ethos and character and an ability and willingness to help lead the school towards the MSB spirit . Evidence of promoting, implementing and monitoring equal opportunities across all aspects of the school . Demonstrate a commitment to promoting the health, welfare and safeguarding of students and staff . Demonstrate high level of written and verbal communication skills and high level of interpersonal skills . Demonstrate a capacity to develop constructive relationships with students, parents and staff and contribute to the leadership and management of the school Leadership of the subject and curriculum . Develop and implement policies and practices for the department which reflect the school's . commitment to high achievement through effective teaching and learning . Prepare and review curriculum maps created with inputs from the teachers . Ensure coverage of classes and effective implementation of the curriculum on a daily basis . Actively support school-wide focus areas and ensure these are embedded in class level practices . Ensure all classes in the department are using effective evidence-based practices . Procure and maintain resources like library books, charts, maps, lab equipment etc. and explore opportunities to develop or incorporate new resources from a wide range of sources inside and outside the school . Manage and deploy teaching, support staff and financial resources within the department effectively . Initiate and, where appropriate, organize curricular, extra-curricular and educational enhancement activities related to the department . Develop and monitor the application of ICT in learning within the department . Liaising with the DI department to ensure compliance with key Islamic principles Leadership of teaching and learning in the department . Monitor and evaluate the department's specification and schemes of work . Engage all subject staff in the creation, consistent implementation and improvement . of the yearly department development plans and schemes of work . Monitor the progress made in achieving departmental plans and targets . Ensure curriculum coverage, continuity and progression in the subject for all pupils, . including those of high ability and those with special educational needs . Develop and implement time bound action plans with SEN team and support staff (including prior discussion and joint planning) to benefit from their specialist knowledge and to maximize their effectiveness . Monitoring students' progress and attainment across the school in liaison with the Subject Coordinator and setting aspirational students target . Monitoring and maintaining departmental documents and records including but not limited to photographs, videos of student's work, lesson observations, notebook scrutiny, events, accurate records of students with special educational needs, etc. . Ensure that examinations or other suitable methods of assessment are devised and applied at appropriate times. All tests, examinations and assessments are based on the department's specification and are appropriate designed in terms of: . Marks distribution . Level of challenge . Range of questions and topics covered . Appropriate timing . Clarity of questions asked Support and leadership of staff within the department . Ensure all teachers in the department are performing at appropriate professional standards . Use a variety of methods to develop, monitor and enhance the teaching and learning offered by the department by holding regular department meetings to ensure there is cohesion in the department and take appropriate action to improve further the quality of teaching and learning. . Liaise with staff to monitor their wellbeing and to arrange for appropriate development and support as required . Be an exceptional role model with high standards of integrity and approachability . Demonstrate exceptional classroom teaching skills and the capacity to support colleagues, to continually improve teaching and learning . Lead peer to peer coaching and mentoring programmes across the department . Responsible for inducting NQTs and new staff with school policies, expectations and systems. . Assist the Senior leaders in observing potential candidates for a position in the department . Support teachers and work with students who are not engaging in learning and/or are misbehaving in classes . Facilitate conflict resolution between staff, between teachers & students and between teachers & parents Administration and management of the department . Maintain school policies and procedures relevant to the department and update whenever required . Ability to effectively supervise and lead staff within the department . Monitor records of staff attendance, absences and proxies allocated, and provide regular reports to the leadership team . Coordinate the preparation, publication and communication of: . special event arrangements such as student assemblies, end of year activities, extra-curricular activities . arrangements for parent-teacher meetings and advice to parents and teachers . Responsible for bidding for funds for the department and prioritize resources needed as indicated in the school's development plans . Devolving responsibilities and delegating tasks, as appropriate; evaluating practice; and developing an acceptance of accountability Leadership and engagement in professional learning . Ability to manage change and work under pressure of changing circumstances . Be a 'team player' and demonstrate ability to stay motivated, ambitious and upbeat . Demonstrate commitment and capacity to actively contribute to and lead department-based improvement initiatives and a commitment to ongoing professional learning for self and others to enable further development of skills, expertise and teaching capacity . Lead workshops and arrange external resources to educate all stakeholders on topics and issues related to whole-school Essential Skills and Knowledge . Appropriate qualifications and relevant experience for the role . Demonstrates deep knowledge of the curriculum and excellent teaching practices . Demonstrates commitment to professional learning and is up to date with current research regarding pedagogy and curriculum . An ability to create a positive, collaborative work environment and the ability to lead change .
