General Foreman
Position Title: General Foreman
Department: Operations / Construction
Reports To: Project Manager / Superintendent
1. Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and authoritative General Foreman to lead and supervise all on-site activities for our construction or industrial projects. The General Foreman is the linchpin between project management and the field workforce, responsible for ensuring that work is executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. This role requires a hands-on leader with extensive trade knowledge, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to motivate and direct crews to achieve project goals.
2. Key Responsibilities

  • On-Site Leadership and Supervision:
  • Directly supervise and coordinate the activities of all tradespeople, subcontractors, and laborers on the job site.
  • Read and interpret project plans, blueprints, and specifications to direct work and ensure compliance.
  • Assign tasks to crew members, provide clear instructions, and ensure the availability of tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all on-site personnel, resolving conflicts and maintaining high team morale.
  • Safety and Compliance:
  • Enforce a "Safety First" culture and ensure strict adherence to company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA regulations.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks, safety meetings, and site inspections to identify and mitigate potential hazards.
  • Investigate any incidents or near-misses and implement corrective actions promptly.
  • Ensure the site is maintained in a clean, organized, and secure manner.
  • Quality Control and Production:
  • Monitor work in progress to ensure it meets the project's quality standards and specifications.
  • Perform regular inspections and coordinate with quality control personnel to identify and rectify deficiencies.
  • Ensure that all work is performed efficiently and productively to meet or exceed project milestones.
  • Planning and Scheduling:
  • Work with the Project Manager to develop short-term look-ahead schedules and daily work plans.
  • Monitor progress against the project schedule and proactively identify and address potential delays.
  • Manage material deliveries and equipment logistics to support the workflow without interruption.
  • Communication and Reporting:
  • Act as the critical communication link between the field and project management.
  • Provide daily and weekly progress reports to the Project Manager, including manpower counts, work completed, and any issues encountered.
  • Liaise with client representatives, inspectors, and other stakeholders on site as required.
  • Administration:
  • Manage on-site timekeeping and daily reports for the crew.
  • Monitor labor hours and material usage to assist in cost control.
3. Qualifications and Skills
  • Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; a degree or certification in a construction-related field is a strong asset.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in the relevant industry (e.g., construction, mechanical, civil), with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory foreman role.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of construction/industrial methods, materials, and tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex construction documents, schematics, and specifications.
  • Strong understanding of construction scheduling and sequencing.
  • Proficient with standard site technology (e.g., smartphones, tablets for reporting).
  • Certifications:
  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification or equivalent is mandatory.
  • First Aid/CPR certification is highly desirable.
  • Other trade-specific certifications (e.g., welding, scaffolding) as required.
  • Soft Skills:
  • Proven Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and hold a diverse crew accountable.
  • Decisive Problem-Solver: Excellent critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to resolve issues quickly and effectively under pressure.
  • Exceptional Communicator: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to give clear directions and communicate with all levels of personnel.
  • High Integrity: Demonstrates a strong work ethic, reliability, and professionalism at all times.
  • Organized and Proactive: Highly organized with the ability to plan ahead and anticipate project needs.
